What was Mayfield's record in 1980 and how did they miss the playoffs? To be honest I dont recall that. The last time Mayfield even had a bad record was 1974 and I believe they were 5-5. I could be mistaken so correct me if I'm wrong.

Mayfield was pretty good that year ... I suspect they lost just two games, to Fort Campbell and Paducah Tilghman. Back then, you had to win the district to advance to the playoffs.

 

Tilghman and Mayfield played on TV that year ... WPSD in Paducah showed the game on tape-delay. The Tornado trailed 14-7 late, best I recall, scored and won with the two-point conversion.

 

At that time, the 2A district was brutal. Fort Campbell won the state title in 1979 after losing to Heath during the regular season. Heath had to beat Mayfield to win the district title but couldn't get it done. If memory serves, Fort Campbell basically rolled to the state title, with only one close game in the postseason.

This is Mayfield's game to win or lose.......are they gonna show up is the question??

The south end zone at Fulton City adjoins the highway on the border, meaning an extra point with any umph to it lands in Tennessee.

Sorry but I must be looking at a different paper. Mayfield is winning the first game with 75 seconds to go when Fulton City completes 2 very unlikely passes and overcomes a 4th and forever. The additional scores Fulton got were meaningless after the pass for the TD and only occurred as a result of Mayfield having to try to score in the final minute ofthe game. This is a Mayfield team with 4 starters from the previous week out and I think 3 played both ways.

This time around Mayfield has some ofthose key players back including the QB who is a difference maker in what the Cards can do on offense. Up front Mayfield was better than Fulton last time. All this on paper looks to favor the Cards on my paper but Fulton is certainly very capable of winning again but the favorite tag on paper would go to Mayfield

Fulton City has two advantages going for them in this contest

 

1) They will be playing at home in front of what should be the largest crowd ever to witness a Fulton City home football game

 

2) They know they have beaten Mayfield before this season and feel like they can play and win against the Cards on Friday night

 

Mayfield has these advantages for them:

 

1) They know they should have won the first meeting...as they ran the ball at will against a 8-9 man front between the 20's but the offense bogged down in red zone resulting in only three points...but Mayfield was at a disadvantage in that game playing with several starters out including their starting QB and having to go with a freshman under center causing Mayfield's offense to be very vanilla. Armstrong is a much different and mobile QB and if Fulton uses their same defensive scheme then Mayfield should be able to put points on the board as we had several open receivers in the first contest but Guhy was not able to move around and get the ball off to them.

 

2) Mayfield remembers the classless acts by some of the Fulton City fans coming onto the field and spitting and throwing things down on the Cardinal Logo in the middle of the field. They also remember FC running up the score after returning a late interception to the 5-yard line with 1.3 seconds remaining and the score being 30-19...so instead of doing the right thing and either just taking a knee or running a dive play...they do a direct snap in shotgun formation and run a halfback pass for the final score.

 

3) Mayfield's main problem in the last half of the season has been focus...and with what transpired above in #2...I don't think intensity and focus will be a problem Friday night.

 

It should be a great game...but I will take the Cards to survive and advance for at least one more round next week against probably a very good Frankfort team.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "paper". I should have said when you compare the teams, I would give a slight nod to Fulton City. I was just trying to show that BGP sees this game more in Mayfield's favor than some WKY fans do. However, I think it would be quite a feat to beat the Cards twice in one year.

 

*Well, for one thing...the injury bug has bitten Mayfield somewhat and from what I hear may be playing without two starters.

 

*Fulton has beaten Mayfield once at War Memorial and this game will be on their home field. Has to help mentally, especially after the fumble/penality debacle at Fulton last year!

 

*Mayfield is giving up to big play and Fulton has some playmakers. Plus...Mayfield's red zone ineffectiveness may come in to play. They just haven't been able to punch it in.

 

*Armstrong did NOT throw the ball well last week, plus Coach Morris will grind this game out...Just don't see the QB sneak/rollout beating Fulton as it did against Crittendon last week. Fulton is too fast and hit too hard. I would like to see McCuiston used more and some middle screens...we seems to get locked into off left tackle, right tackle, left, right, left...then we get in 3rd and longs and it makes it harder to convert!
