Its Ugly In Boone County RE: Cooper High

Featured Replies

It's all going to change again in a couple years anyway...It ALWAYS does..it seems Boone County likes to re-district. The only way to assure your kid a guaranteed spot in a particular school in Boone County is to work for that school. Otherwise, hold on for the ride of different schools to come your way!

I loved my high school, however as I look back on my senior year compared to my lil brother's senior year...I could see a change in the dynamics of the school.

Boone is maxed out in bonding money to build more schools. They almost need a new school every year.

Inner city?? Have you ever been to OTR, Walnut Hills, Fairmont, Lower Price Hill? Thats inner city. Nothing in Boone County even resembles inner city...

To answer your question, yes I have spent some time in a couple of those cities. Also, I said near... I realize Florence is nothing like most of the places you mentioned but Union is nothing like Florence. I don't want to get off track here but I can tell you it is all relative, and relative to Union, Florence is near inner city.

Let me ask everyone a question, when Covington and Newport knock out the low income housing where do you think many of those people end up? Answer, a lot end up in Florence apartments and renting some of the run down housing on the east side of Florence.

The average price of a house in Pleasant Valley Meadows (where most of the citizens at the meeting are from) is probably in the 350K range. Right or wrong, that economic class of people don't want to mix with renters and the under 150K housing crowd.

Also, on the living in the city of Florence comment, Pleasant Valley Meadows in NOT in the city of Florence. They have Florence mailing addresses but they are NOT in the city of Florence (just like Oakbrook).

Sounds to me that all those people moving into Boone Co. seeking lower property taxes have stretched the county's resources to the limit. A property tax hike would appear to be in order so they can pay for the good schools and high quality of living they moved in there for, or it won't be such a nice place to live anymore.

It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with the state funding formulas that are socialist in nature.

So you think a county like Jackson County, which is one of the poorest in the state and has very little in terms of industry should be funded at the same relative levels (according to population) as a Boone County, which has ... everything? You act like Boone County's getting the short end of the stick here, when it has everything in its favor as far as quality of life.

Sounds more like the Boone County leaders are more concerned about getting re-elected than making the hard choice and doing what's best for everyone.

Jim, this debate is for another thread, but I think communities should have the level of schooling they are willing to pay for. If all the money Boone County paid into school taxes stayed in Boone County I doubt any of this would be an issue.

On the Jackson County question, I would have to spend some time looking at all the issues and options but one thing is for sure, in no way should Boone County school tax money be going to Jackson County schools.

If you want to debate this more please start another thread and I will jump in.

Why isn't open enrollment an option? Wouldn't this alleviate some of these concerns?

What are the legal grounds by which school district rezoning must take place?

For instance, if you want your property rezoned (as in from Residential to Commercial, for example) you cannot just say, hey I want to be rezoned. You must either 1. Show that there have been changes of an economic, social, or physical nature; or, 2. the property was originally zoned incorrectly; or, it is in agreement with the comprehensive plan / future land use.

I understand that, but from what I understand, there are plenty of students that live in the City of Florence, but attend Ryle.....why is that?

Isn't the point about all of this is to take pressure of Boone/Ryle/Conner with attendance? Boone Co is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. I think it should be about balancing the schools out so the kids arent in classes of 40 and not about property value.

I understand that, as my mailing address is also Florence, but if I have to go to the post office, I always go to Burlington, as it is easier to get to from my home. In going west on 18 I have to fight through a whole lot less traffic. Each and every time you go east on route 18 toward Florence, you can figure on at least 15 minutes or more from my home to the Interstate on Route 18 and it is not even 6 miles.

I suppose most of those kids are from Orleans and other close subdivisions. The funny thing about that is all those people have Union mailing addresses but actually live in the city of Florence. The post office dictates those Union mailing addresses for the Florence residents.

I think the answer is there are several governmental agencies that regulate parts of our life and they often operate independent of each other.
