Juniors Playing JV???

Featured Replies

Interesting new policy put in place by NDA's head coach stating that juniors cannot play JV. Note: She also has a rule that seniors cannot be cut (not exactly a great motivator IMO). Do other schools have this? Of course, I realize most schools are not fortunate enough to have the depth that schools like NDA so it could be moot.

I've always looked at this as a bonus. If you've got enough talent on your team that a junior can play JV and get some minutes, you're in darn good shape. You get her ready for not only next season but even this season.

Thoughts?

I am not to keen on JR playing JV ball , if they didn't get enough play time and develop during that period of time maybe they don't deserve to even play varsity. Maybe I am from the old school.

IMO if you don't start on varsity and you are a junior or lower - you play JV.

Lets say that a school has 4 very talented seniors that play your position but you are better than the SOPHS behind you at your position. Should you be cut, rot on the varsity bench, or play JV?

JV = Junior Varsity

For this reason and for this reason only, juniors should be able to play JV.

I have, however, heard of other teams implementing a "no junior on JV" policy. This policy makes sense if you have a group of juniors that have not made adequate progress over the previous years even after getting ample JV time. They're not showing progress and they're robbing younger, more talented players of valuable playing time. If that is the case, I think the best thing to do is to make the tough decision to cut them. It will also prevent the awkwardness associated with a senior that has no talent being stuck on the bench. That's not a good situation for anyone (parents, players, coaches) involved.

She also has a rule that seniors cannot be cut (not exactly a great motivator IMO).

What if 10 seniors show up for tryouts? Any idea how that is handled?

Interesting.

I assume the "seniors cannot be cut" rule means "Seniors who have been playing in the program for the last three year" cannot be cut.

That part is actually a good rule. No sense cutting a Senior for a Soph that may have more potential. Good to see a coach reward a player for working hard for 3 years.

As for no Juniors on JV I'm going to assume that means lots of Juniors are going to get the ax if they can't contribute quality varsity minutes. And that's not a good rule.

I don't see the problem w/Jr's playing JV but if you are a Sr and can't be one of the top 7/8 players on V, sorry, you are gone!

It is a tough spot for the girls involved and the coaches who have to make these decisions. Not sure it is now "new policy" but it is something the team needs to put behind them and get ready for a very tough season. Good luck to those impacted because they are really great girls.

Tough for whom? I only see 3 people that we can its "tough" for and they all got some bad news.

Its not tough for the coach. Its not tough for parents of kids that are on the team.

Add in that two of them are coming back from 2 knee surgeries and JV would be the perfect spot for them and its such a strange decision. I didn't even realize when I started this thread that NDA will have only about 6 or 7 JV players this year. That just adds to my bewilderment.

So you're going to have 3 girls who are most likely better than the majority of the JV girls and could potentially contribute next year when the 4 or so seniors graduate.

This makes sense to you?

CHCS81 it is tough for everyone, and nowhere in my post did I agree or disagree with the decisions made. I simply wished those girls involved the best.

I understand. I just want to say that "tough spot" is grossly underestimating the effect on and feelings of those who were told "thanks but no thanks." "Devastated" may be a better word.

Even if you disregard that aspect of it, the decision simply makes no sense from a basketball standpoint especially for next season. Every school in NKY would wish to have this bounty of talent and "have" to play talented juniors on the JV squad.

I don't know all the particulars in this case. But from what I've observed around the area lately it seems that the "desired" make-up of a Varsity team is generally 4 Seniors, 4 Juniors who can all contribute and 2 Sophs that are potential stars.

Then on JV it is usually the the 2 Sophs from Varsity, another 4 Sophs and 4 Frosh. Then on the Frosh team it is 6-8 Frosh and maybe some 8th graders.

Then the next year it repeats. The 4 Juniors become the 4 Seniors, the 6 Sophs are cut down to 4 Juniors, the best 2 Frosh are Sophs that play Varsity and JV, and the most of the Frosh that became Sophs are cut.
