Because the coach thought they couldn't contribute to the Varsity, and she wouldn't allow them to play JV?? Crazy--Local teams have been littered with senior heros who saw little meanful time at the varsity level as juniors, but became huge contributors as seniors!!

IMO if you don't start on varsity and you are a junior or lower - you play JV.

I agree if you are not going to play over half of the varsity game you should still be playing on JV junior or not.

I agree the Jr's should get to play JV, as an example there was a girl who tore her ACL (playing basketball for her school) as a soph, came back as a Junior and really was not ready for Varsity..played JV all year. Came back and started her SR year and helped the team win the distict.

 

Injuries take time to overcome, both mentally and physically.

So, how many juniors tried out, does anyone know, and how many were cut. Are there any juniors at all that are playing varsity? I can think of one that I know of for sure that is playing varsity, but other than that, I am not sure???

I have been reading all of these post and I must say, I feel for the coaches. They are in a no win situation this time of the year. Regardless of what they do, someone (by this a mean parents) is going to be upset.

 

The bottom line is the coach has a job to do. They have to look out for what is best for the program (not parents). Just because a girl gets cut, does not mean she's a bad person, or does bad in school, or did not hustle. It means the coach made a decision that he/she thought was best for the program. I would hope the decision was not made for personal reasons. I am sure, these coaches dread the cutting process and many lose sleep and realize this girl/family will not think highly of the coach from here on.

 

Until you are a coach and have been through this process, you can say how you think you would handle it, however you have no idea. IT IS NOT FUN TO TELL A HIGH SCHOOL GIRL SHE DID NOT MAKE THE TEAM.

 

If a coach kept every girl, other parents would complain the more talanted girls are being cheated and deserve to play more and win. Its a NO WIN situation.

As I said previously, she is the head of the program so its her kingdom and she makes the rules. However, when you make decisions like this, you open yourself up to questioning and dissenting views. If it were me and I was confident that I made the right decision, what people say on here would go in one ear and out the other. "Bashing" would be a bit extreme. Some have simply questioned the logic of the new rule.

O, the way the thread read, I thought this was a new coach coming in.

1. She has a job to do. I have zero doubt she is doing what she thinks it best for the program.

 

2. I am not a "mean parent" of a player that got cut.

 

3. If the girls that were cut were not as good as the SOPHS that will play JV or even if the SOPHS were "as good" as those cut, then you might be able to justify it. I know these girls and I know the girls on the team so let me stress that neither of the two options I listed ARE the case.

 

One got overall high marks with a few negatives. I've coached competitive basketball (yes, I had to make cuts of kids that I see EVERY DAY and are friends of my kids)and all of my players had some sort of negative - even one who is now playing in college. You take their plusses(and there are many) and you use them in certain game situations. If one can shoot but , say, struggles with ball handling, are you telling me that you as a coach never need someone to bust a zone? IF they can rebound but have trouble guarding on the perimeter are you saying that you can't slide that person over to guard one of the slower players on the floor and take advantage of her rebounding? Factor in that 2 of the 3 are recovering from serious knee surgeries(note the plural) and you can't figure out that maybe a year at the JV level will a)give them a chance to get their knee and game in gear and b) a chance for you to see them in game situations when they are at full/near full speed? Illogical.

 

At no time were any of them told they were not as good as the other JV players. Heck, that would have made it a lot easier because then its simply a subjective debate. Instead, a new illogical rule gets rolled out and its confusing to those of us who know basketball.

 

Lastly, it can't be a "numbers" thing because there are only about 7 JV players.

 

The coach has put herself in a tough situation with the hard and fast rule. Has she locked herself into only having the option of bring up FROSH to the JV level if needed instead of bringing down a JR that doesn't start varsity?

The coach made a decision and for some reason implemented a new rule. Her perogative as the HC. My perogative as someone who doesn't have anyone involved is to say she made a mistake and a poor decision. There is no logic to this new rule. Period.
