Having been on the receiving of tramatic news, I know that sometimes things are not heard correctly when you are on the receiving end. .

 

That would be understandable if that was when the players first heard it.

Yes, there are schools that can't afford to cut anyone. For some schools, it is hard to even field a freshman team.

Interesting conversation. I know that juniors played JV last year. In checking with people in the program your initial statement that there is hard rule that no juniors will play JV is not correct. The head coach does not have this rule. .

 

One thing I did to forget to mention, Blackjack, was that technically it may not be a rule but when you're told "as we told you there will be no juniors on JV" then it really doesn't matter if you call it a rule, policy, edict, or whim. Its all the same.

 

Maybe the people in the program that you checked with were simply unaware or they forgot what they said. Who knows.

Well, that does change it a little. It seems that the strategy this year is that they want JV for the younger players that they believe will be the core of the team next year.

 

Keeping 3-4 juniors on JV means about 8-10 minutes less per game for sophomores and any freshmen on JV.

 

Also, question arises with the juniors, are they going to dress V when the sophomores are the ones that the coach wants to give the V playing time off the bench, too.

 

As a coach, are you running into future problems this season when you have juniors NOT dressing and/or playing V while sophomores are? Parents tend to get upset when that occurs.

 

I see this more as a one year strategy rather than a rule that they are going to follow each year.

Interesting new policy put in place by NDA's head coach stating that juniors cannot play JV. Note: She also has a rule that seniors cannot be cut (not exactly a great motivator IMO). Do other schools have this? Of course, I realize most schools are not fortunate enough to have the depth that schools like NDA so it could be moot.

 

I've always looked at this as a bonus. If you've got enough talent on your team that a junior can play JV and get some minutes, you're in darn good shape. You get her ready for not only next season but even this season.

That would not happen. The seniors on the team are those that have come up through the system.

There are many views flying around so I mind as well throw mine is as well.

 

I know for a fact that Highlands and Conner both had the majority of their starting 5 for JV were juniors. When you have talented seniors who are going to play the majority of your varsity minutes - how are these juniors able to get the game experience that they need? PLAY JV!!!!

 

When those seniors are gone, the juniors will have to carry the team the next year and will be unprepared if not given the opportunity.

 

I don't agree with it. You would only cut a junior if they were not good enough to play JV- that is why they call it "JUNIOR VARSITY"- if there is a huge class of sophomores that is more talented, maybe but not as a absolute rule.

 

The attrition with girls as they age through high school is high- 10 can very easily be 3 the next year- then where are you?

And, I will also add that, the juniors that were cut are probably good enough to go to alot of the other schools and play on their varsity team. And, I am sure that the other schools would love to have the girls on their team. I think it is great that Notre Dame always has the numbers, but some of the underclass girls may see what is happening to the junior girls, and may decide not to try out next year for fear of not making the team.
