In 2004 CCH made a run to the Final 4 in the state. That team had about 6 or 7 seniors that all contributed. One was super-sub Greg Erpenbeck. When Greg was a junior, if memory serves, he rarely played in varsity games . Instead , Coach L had him get his minutes playing JV. Imagine if Coach L had implemented a silly rule when Greg was a JR and cut him because he wasn't good enough to get major minutes at the varsity level. Anyone that watched that team in 2004 knows what a contributor Erp was as he did everything you want a sub to do including set the attitude for how CCH was going to play.

 

Thank goodness Coach L can see a bit further down the road .

Say 5 on varsity and 3 cut. 8 Jrs would have been a lot to carry. Not saying the said policy is right, but if all 8 were kept, what happens next year when now they would have 8 seniors?

If you are playing with a senior laden team and you are that successful, then job well done. If you do not reach a certain level of success then you have set your program back due to the inexperience of the next couple of classes. I think coaches have the present season in mind always, but still must have the future in the back of their minds. Tricky thing to always be right.

Interesting conversation. I know that juniors played JV last year. In checking with people in the program your initial statement that there is hard rule that no juniors will play JV is not correct. The head coach does not have this rule. Evidently she told the girls that got cut that due to how many underclassmen there are, including the juniors, she did not believe there would be much of an opportunity for juniors to play. Coaches face this every day - # number of players on a team vs # of minutes in a game. If she is already carrying 8 varsity and wants to build a future with underclassmen, there may not be opportunity for other juniors.

This has been stated several times and I agree 100%. Get the facts first then discuss. But watch what happens next.

I'm not sure what you are not grasping nor why. I guess I'm not being very clear.

 

I'll tie it to NDA. If Cheryl was the CCH coach, Greg would have been CUT his junior year therefore not allowing him to be around the following year and making a significant contribution and THUS hurting the team.

 

THAT is why the blanket rule of no juniors on JV is a big MISTAKE.

Having been on the receiving of tramatic news, I know that sometimes things are not heard correctly when you are on the receiving end. I know that the coach emphatically denies there is such a rule and past history supports this.
