Juniors Playing JV???

Featured Replies

Tough for whom? I only see 3 people that we can its "tough" for and they all got some bad news.

Its not tough for the coach. Its not tough for parents of kids that are on the team.

Add in that two of them are coming back from 2 knee surgeries and JV would be the perfect spot for them and its such a strange decision. I didn't even realize when I started this thread that NDA will have only about 6 or 7 JV players this year. That just adds to my bewilderment.

So you're going to have 3 girls who are most likely better than the majority of the JV girls and could potentially contribute next year when the 4 or so seniors graduate.

This makes sense to you?

So you spoke with them and this what they told you?

If I kept a player as a junior, I always thought I was making a commitment for them as a senior. But that was no guarantee of playing time as a senior and they needed to be okay with their role as seniors. Which might be 6-8 minutes or less per game.

Junior playing JV depends on the situation. What if you have 6-8 seniors and 3-5 juniors. That is too many to strictly play varsity.

Ideally, JV would be made up of sophomores and top freshmen.

I disagree "if" the coach says a Junior can never play JV. There are situations and circumstances that will and can come into play where it would work out best for the girl and the team. One thing a good coach should always remember never say "never"!

It seems to me like the best bball player in history didn't even make his high school team until he was a junior. There are girls who have made great strides between their junior and senior yr. I don't know this situation at all but its always easier for everyone but the people involved.

Be careful of "blanket policies." Always leave an option for you as a coach to make a decision.

Not entirely true in your MJ reference. He didn't make the varsity as a SOPH but he did play JV at Laney High.

Makes zero sense sir. Isn't this the team that had four ACL tears last year? I guess they figure the injury bug will pass them by this year. Cutting kids coming back from injury is pretty low.

The policy has to be new, because NDA has had Juniors play JV in other years. All three young ladies are top notch kids, and should have had the chance to play at least JV ball. One had to overcome two knee injuries and with all the pain and hard work that it takes to get yourself back in playing shape after having those injuries, then to not even get a chance to play JV ball is a bit much for me. What kind of message is she trying to send to future NDA players who get hurt playing for her?

Didn't last year Notre Dame's freshman basketball team, have only about 7 or 8 players on the team. I know they lost at least one player, Torrie Lange, who is playing soccer only. So, you would think that with a small sophmore class returning, that there would be room for juniors to play on the JV team.

NDA had freshman playing JV last season because they were very good. The JV team won the championship and most of those players could play varsity in many other schools. It is just a very competitive situation. Who knows what is coming in from the freshman class.

The coach made a decision which was for the best interest of the program and right or wrong that is her job. As far as a new policy no coach would declare a junior will never play JV and I doubt that happened here. It just appears this year no junior will be on the JV team.

You would assume incorrectly.

The coach made a decision and for some reason implemented a new rule. Her perogative as the HC. My perogative as someone who doesn't have anyone involved is to say she made a mistake and a poor decision. There is no logic to this new rule. Period.

We are in the same boat. I haven't ever had a child play sports for NDA, but a lot of her friends did play and still play today. As a outsider looking in, I just don't understand the decision. The one young lady is an outstanding example of what NDA wants in it's students: Smart (one of top academic students in her Class and at NDA that is saying something), Athletic (to work so hard after not only having one major knee surgery but to have two and then still want to come back and play), and an outstanding young woman (who one day NDA will be sorry that they let down) Again really displeased with the entire incident and am still waiting to learn if the JV will only dress 6-7 kids..... Anyone?

I'm confused reading this thread? Why would these girls (current juniors as I understand) be off the team, whether or not they play JV; especially after showing dedication in coming back from injuries? Were they cut, did they quit??

A blanket rule saying no juniors on JV is absurd!! As many have said, for the betterment of the program; each circumstance should be considered individually. Basically saying if a junior isn't good enough to be "in the rotation", just take the year off, and we'll bring you back next year and depend on you to win it all for us?? Makes no sense unless your goal is to thin your overall player's numbers, because unless you're projecting as a starter or top reserve, why come back for your junior year??

All the players and the one I am most upset about, were cut by the coach.

I don't know all the particulars in this case. But from what I've observed around the area lately it seems that the "desired" make-up of a Varsity team is generally 4 Seniors, 4 Juniors who can all contribute and 2 Sophs that are potential stars.

Then on JV it is usually the the 2 Sophs from Varsity, another 4 Sophs and 4 Frosh. Then on the Frosh team it is 6-8 Frosh and maybe some 8th graders.

Then the next year it repeats. The 4 Juniors become the 4 Seniors, the 6 Sophs are cut down to 4 Juniors, the best 2 Frosh are Sophs that play Varsity and JV, and the most of the Frosh that became Sophs are cut.

Sounds good, but how many years can you have an "ideal" situation? In NKY you've got a lot of small/medium sized schools who tend to have "good class-bad class" syndrome; and there's very often a place on the JV team for juniors, especially if the senior class is deep & talented. Where else are the juniors who will be counted on to lead the team next year, supposed to get game experience. Most schools I'm familiar with practice the JV & Varsity together, but if you're in the 7-10 range in the rotation, you still need the real game experience JV can provide.

All the players and the one I am most upset about, were cut by the coach.

Because the coach thought they couldn't contribute to the Varsity, and she wouldn't allow them to play JV?? Crazy--Local teams have been littered with senior heros who saw little meanful time at the varsity level as juniors, but became huge contributors as seniors!!
