You are exactly right about that. And that is a big reason for the success of the FTJFL. If my understanding of the league the Red Devils play in is accurate (and it may not be, if so forgive me), the head coaches are almost professional coaches. By that I mean they don't only coach when they have a son on the team. Again, from what I'm told by parents that now have their kids in the FT league (which I acknowledge may make them biased) the Red Devil coaches think their league is the end, as opposed to a means to the end. They are extremely interested in winning and winning is a much higher priority than having all the kids participate. Thus there may be some Bear Bryants there.

 

Whereas in FT, with the head coaches almost always being parents (which means they rotate almost every year) no one is trying to build some career winning record. Playing in the FT league is not the end; winning a high school state championship is the end and the youth league is just a means to help make that happen. By having every one participate, it encourages kids (even those not so talented as young kids) to keep playing football. And some of those kids not very talented as young kids end up turning into very fine high school athletes. No Bear Bryants in FT, and frankly that's a good thing.

I think some of your thoughts are in error. Several of the coaches I know do not have kids on the team. My son plays for the Spartans and their current head coach was my head coach when I played for the Spartans. The coach in question didn't have a son playing then and he doesn't have one now. Also, the head coach of the Red Devils (juniors) doesn't have a son playing to my knowledge other than at NCC.

 

All things considered I think what the FTJFL does is superior to the other leagues (Boone and NKY) but in no way is that a knock on either the Boone or NKY leagues.

 

In short, the FTJFL exists to help Highlands win state championships, the other leagues are their own entities and therefore need to win their own championships.

All are great programs but the FTJFL has a specific purpose to instruct and produce a greater pool of experienced athletes to Highlands program than if Fort Thomas in general just participated in another league. To that end I believe it has exceeded all expectations.

I was surprised to see B-wood only had 17 kids or so dressed for the game. Although they are A, I thought they'd have more. It's simply two different styles of football between both schools. The speed of HHS was too much to overcome. B-wood is a respectable and quality program. Good luck the rest of the season. Good game Birds!
