JV GAME: Beechwood vs. Highlands

Featured Replies

Ft. Thomas has their own junior football league. They get more kids involved playing football this way. More playing time and more opportunity for kids to learn to play.

If Highlands played in the league they would dominate but thats another thread. I think they want to develop their own and give them all more playing time instead of having one stud team to participate in the NKYFL. Would love to see one game a year or something like that where they took the All Stars from each division in FTJRFL and played the Super Bowl winner in NKYFL?
They tried this a few years ago and it didn't work out. They only practiced for a week and then played the game. (It was ugly) The Baby Birds didn't fare to well against Red Devils.
How come Highlands doesn't play in the league, and in what league do their kids play?

~125 kids on 5 teams in 3rd/4th Grade Division

~150 kids on 6 teams in 5th/6th Grade Division

~100 kids on 4 teams in 7th/8th Grade Division

Some of the teams in the NKYFL are a lot better than you might realize. Jimmies and Joes are more important than Xs and Os in youth football and my guess is you would be surprised that Highlands would not even come close to dominating the league.

Well, the Tigers routinely take a whoopin from Highlands, so I suspect we will be the underdogs. :sssh: However, we like it that way.

We have a very good JV team; 5-1 for the season so far. A lot of hungry and talented sophs and juniors, so it should be a good match up.

It is Breeders Cup Day, so I personally was hoping for a Monday night game, but the Tigers win in a conflict every time!

I guess that did sound somewhat arrogant. Not to put down those teams and that league because there are some studs in that league. We have one at Highlands now . I guess i am just curious how it would play out if you took the 4-5 teams in each division and had the top 25-30 kids and threw them out there against the Spartans, Red Devils, Raiders, etc.

As far as the X's and O's part, Im not so sure that there are any Bear Bryants in the FTJRFL's. I thnk most of the success is because more kids are playing and the more you play the better you get. The more you sit its tough to get better.

The difference in the FTJRFL and lets say the Red Devils is the group playing in the Red Devils grow up playing with the same kids year in and year out. They are use to how each plays. In the Fort you have kids that are playing with a somewhat different group of kids year in and year out. Not only that, in FTJRFL the kids are learning. It isn't all about winning. Playing time is for everyone on the team, not just the studs.

It has never worked to take say the best of the 7 and 8th grade group, practice a week and then play against another team that has played together all year.

I agree, but wouldnt it be kind of fun to see how they would do despite? Those kids get tired of beating up on their friends all season, might be nice to see em pounding some different kids.

You are exactly right about that. And that is a big reason for the success of the FTJFL. If my understanding of the league the Red Devils play in is accurate (and it may not be, if so forgive me), the head coaches are almost professional coaches. By that I mean they don't only coach when they have a son on the team. Again, from what I'm told by parents that now have their kids in the FT league (which I acknowledge may make them biased) the Red Devil coaches think their league is the end, as opposed to a means to the end. They are extremely interested in winning and winning is a much higher priority than having all the kids participate. Thus there may be some Bear Bryants there.

Whereas in FT, with the head coaches almost always being parents (which means they rotate almost every year) no one is trying to build some career winning record. Playing in the FT league is not the end; winning a high school state championship is the end and the youth league is just a means to help make that happen. By having every one participate, it encourages kids (even those not so talented as young kids) to keep playing football. And some of those kids not very talented as young kids end up turning into very fine high school athletes. No Bear Bryants in FT, and frankly that's a good thing.

I have seen that and it is UGLY!

As for beating up on their friends, that is what makes that first freshman game so special. They get to finally hit the enemy.
