I agree. There are not many offenses as good as UL's anywhere in the country. Give UK or UL the defense LSU has and you have an undefeated #1 team no matter which schedule you use IMHO.

 

I am glad to see the Cards starting to gain some momentum and hope they finish without another loss this season. It is good for football throughout the state.

IMO, the majority of the problems on defense have come from lack of focus and effort. The first five games, I'd say 90% of the big plays that were given up were because of blown coverages (based on the fact that I find it hard to believe that any D1 athlete can get beat that bad for a receiver to be as open as some of them were). If Petrino were still in town, I doubt there would be those focus and/or effort problems. JMO.

 

Good point. Although, sometimes youth can be a MAJOR factor. These kids are used to being the biggest, baddest and fastest from their various high schools and it was easy to many of them. At this level, they were all the biggest, baddest and fastest and it is the select few who can be major contributors in their first major action or starts. It takes time. UK will struggle in the passing game next year with the loss of Woodson, Burton, Johnson and company. The young guys will have to grow up fast. Same happened to UL's defense. Although I do agree that it probably would have been to a lesser extent with Petrino.

Oh I agree...Youth is definitely one of the main contributors to UL's lackluster defense. I just think that Petrino had a way of getting to his players early and often.

I'm thinking 6-1 and ranked somewhere 9-12. Petrino is struggling with the Falcons because the Falcons are a struggling team right now. I think Petrino is one of the few college coaches if given time can be successfull in the NFL. The Falcons were barely a decent team with Vick. his loss and the coaching changes are tough to overcome the first year or so. Given time and a few good drafts and Petrino could make the Falcons an annual playoff team. There are also some mouthy whiny veterans that think more of themselves than the program that will either get on board or get traded.

Isn't everyone blaming UL's problems on the defense, and isn't it the same coordinator Petrino had? While he is a great offensive coach I don't know how much his presence would help the D.

Discipline has been the biggest problem for this team really and THAT was never a problem for Petrino's teams. The D-Line coach also left when Petrino did as well for what it's worth.

And although UL's defense is like melted butter this season, they were not exactly a juggernaut last season - which is kind of the impression given off sometimes. With the loss of your best players on defense coupled with the lack of discipline, it really was not that tough to see they were not going to be good on that side of the ball.

Which really has nothing to do with this argument, because most know that is not true. Just like it is not true that UK is anywhere close to be a national power (which many will claim, I assure you).

UCONN, Pitt, W.V., Rutgers, and USF are still on the schedule. Even if they were 7-0 right now, they WILL lose at least 2 of those games. In fact I see them losing 3 of them.

 

If Bobby was still at U of L, I see them losing 3 games TOTAL this season. Sometimes a strong established coach can pull miracles and it would take miracles to get this team to a BCS game this season. Whether it be Coach K or Petrino at the helm.
