Mexican flag flying over American flag in Nevada

Featured Replies

At the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis the flag laws almost caused an international incident. A European county (my Grandpa couldn’t remember which one. He had too many $0.25 Burger beer drafts at the VFW hall that night) erected a 50 foot tower and placed their flag on top. The tallest American flag was on a shorter flag pole. The St. Louis police arrested the person who raised the flag. It turned out that the person who raised the flag was an American citizen and he was charged with treason. So the law has been enforced before!

We should be at war with Mexico. The Mexican government and its willing accomplices in Washington have been supporting a silent invasion of this country for several decades. I am 100% in favor of expanding our legal immigration programs but what Mexico and our own government has been doing to this country is a crime.

Planting a flag is the first step to claiming territory as your own. Defending the flag and the things for which it stands follows. Illegal immigrants who believe that Mexico is the rightful owner of the American Southwest understand the power of the flag and it is unfortunate that so many American citizens don't understand it. Illegals are in the process of reclaiming what many of them believe is rightfully their's and most Americans don't seem to care.

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.

I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

I assume everyone knows what this is and where it is posted.

I wonder how many of our families wouldn't be here if these attitudes had existed a few hundred years ago.

Do you want to live in a country that arrests people for "anti-American thoughts?" I sure don't.

Are you saying that anti-immigrant sentiments are a new phenomenon? All large groups of legal immigrants were greeted with their share of bigotry, discrimination, etc., including the Irish, Scotsh, Germans, Chinese, and every other ethnic group whose descendants are live here today. Legal immigrants should have been welcomed to our shores just as the words you cited said, but the reality was far different. My understanding is that today's illegal immigrants have it far better than many legal immigrants of earlier eras.

In contrast, Illegal aliens should not be welcomed into this country period. A country that can't secure its own borders and control the immigration process cannot survive in the long term. American culture and sovereignty is under siege and the longer this nation waits to bring immigration back under control, the more difficult and costly in terms of money and lives it will be. We fought one bloody Civil War to preserve this country and we should never have to fight another.

I'm amazed at some of the responses I've read so far.

I don't understand how a Mexican comes in the United States, (illegally more than likely) disrepects Old Glory like that, and then when a proud American takes action against it, he gets condemned for it. Unbelievable.

Who cares if that wasn't the "most civil" way to get the flag down? Do you think Ulysses S. Grant went down to Virginia and asked Robert E. Lee to take down his Confederate battle flags? No, he when and fought for what he thought was right and NOW is the time for us as American citizens to start fighting for what's right and take our country back before it's too late. I don't know about yall but I don't wanna live in the "United States of Mexico" so if I ever come across a situation like this you darn well better believe I'm gonna take action against it.

There's no respect, that's what's wrong with our country these days. No respect for authority, no respect for parents or teachers and no respect for what our Founding Father's laid out for us.

Yea, a "levelheaded" Mexican that could talk to the store owner in Spanish cause he probably doesn't know a single word in the English vocabulary.

And I see we have a levelheaded poster here...

In what way did I condemn him? I simply said that I understood the way he felt and that it could have been handled much better. The flag represents this country and and one of the main focuses of this country is Justice. As I understand it in it's simplest form, Justice is making sure that everyone is allowed due process of the law and this guy side stepped all of that thus defeating his original purpose.

Back in the day when that was placed under the Statue of Liberty, immigrants were coming into the US legally. Also the LEAGAL immigrants knew that the only way to be successful in the United States was to learn the language and respect our customs. Today the ILLEGAL immigrants don’t think they need to know the language and they want us to change our customs and traditions so as not to offend them. People are fed up because the authorities ignore the problem so they take matters into their own hands. If the Federal Government doesn’t do something about protecting our borders from ILLEAGAL immigrants we may have a “mini” Civil War on our hands.

And it is such a peachy process to immigrate legally. The beauracracy in the State Department is such a muddled mess it's becoming hard for even Americans to come and go legally. As far as past immigrants coming over, assimilating and flourishing, that isn't true as most were forced into ghettos or slums. It wasn't before the second or third generations were they able to successfully assimilate.

Yes, let's invade Mexico because they are poor and share a border with us. The immigrants coming over are trying to make a better life for themselves; I can't fault another human for doing that.

But it's legal to fly the Mexican flag.

No, let's threaten Mexico with retaliation for facilitating the illegal immigration of its citizens and the armed incursions by its military along the border to support Mexican drug smugglers and to intimidate American border agents.

As for the illegal immigrants themselves, I don't fault them for breaking our laws to make better lives for themselves and their families. I do fault US and Mexican politicians who have actively encouraged and rewarded illegal immigration by refusing to respect and enforce American laws.

But it's legal to fly the Mexican flag.
It is illegal to fly it above the US flag and the law should be enforced. We will eventually either fight another bloody civil war or surrender large chunks of US territory to illegal immigrants who, if current trends continue, will eventually be a majority in many parts of this country.

The person across the channel from us, flies a large Mexican flag. He has had problems lately with Cubans trespassing and cutting down it down.

This is not true. The process to become a legal citizen is lengthy, but not difficult if you are educated and can speak, read and understand the language. You can stay legally in this country while applying for citizenship. The reason we have immigration laws is to ensure that if you want to become a citizen that you can support yourself and become a viable member of society without the help of government. What is wrong with that?

I have traveled outside of this county over a dozen times in the past 2 years and haven’t had a bit of problems. Again, if you understand the “rules” of traveling internationally it isn’t a difficult process.

Caught the end of a show the other day where a town in either Texas or California had adopted Spanish as it's official language. I'll see if I can find out more about it. The mayor did say that he knows that to become successful an immigrant needs to learn our language. The Spanish language adoption was in recognition that the great majority of the town's citizens could not speack English, therefore, all official business was conducted in Spanish.

The problem is that we publicly give more credence to the minority view then the majority. Would you venture a guess as to how many 'legal' mexican immigrants would be willing to fly the Mexican flag over the American flag?

The perception is that we give more credence to the minority. Would it not make sense that we would think that since no news story was ever told that said "today, a business owner flew the United States flag above all others." ???

There's no way that you believe that this incident is the first step in this guy claiming US territory as his own. No way.

Secondly, do we know this business owner is an illegal immigrant or are we simply assuming he is?

I don’t think it matters if he is or isn’t legal, the question is the same. If you’re such a patriotic Mexican, why did you come to the United States of America?

Irrelevant to the discussion. We have no test for citizens.

Citizens can criticize all they want in public with no fear of retribution from the government. We may not like it but it is part of the deal.

Lastly, American business men and women live and work in other countries around the world. Why? Jobs - maybe no different than this guy. Are they less of Americans? (Please don't sayy "well, let them try putting our flag.... - irrelevant).

Actually they did, in the form of the Know-Nothing party and Immigration quotas.

1) If you want to immigrate to the US you do have to take a citizenship test. If you are already a citizen, you go to school.

2) The businessmen/women that I know who have gone overseas to work are usually sent by an American owned company or they are teachers. I don’t know anyone who has gone overseas to open a 7/11.
