Former Ashland QB eligible to play at Greenup Co.

Featured Replies

I know there were some that posted on here that Ashland's QB from last year Darrell Mahan would never be allowed to play for Greenup Co. this year, well it looks like the KHSAA thought different. I'm glad to see the kid get a chance to play his senior year, but I would really love to know the circumstances on why he was ruled eligible. Maybe someone from Greenup Co. can help us out with this one, because this surely looked like a case of transferring for sports reasons only.

I have nothing against Mahan or Greenup Co, but you are right, transfer for athletic reasons. Mahan was removed from the Ashland football team, for breaking team rules and transfers to another school, while still living in Ashland - he may have a change of address now, but he transferred because he was not able to play football. People always say this is against KHSAA rules, maybe someone can help me out, but I don't think that I know of a single player from North-Eastern Kentucky ever being deemed ineligible after transferring. The transfer rule seems to just add some hoops to jump threw, but if you jump threw all of them you will get to play.

Perhaps the KHSAA had seen enough of Greenup issues this past year and gave them a pass.

I'm shocked the KHSAA cleared him to play. It really make them look like a joke.

Along with Mahan is the kid from Wheelersburg, OH who I believe quit there because of a position change. He was asked to move from the backfield this year to help out on the line. The KHSAA needs to get their act together.

Both players are originally from Greenup so I am sure the can prove that they now live within the school district. But to say that the transfers were for anthing but athletics is absurd.

You are forgetting the Faulkner girls who were forced to sit out a full year. The situation had some similarities to the Mahan matter although, from the real facts, not as blatant. Nonetheless, the result was different.

As for the transfer from Ashland to Greenup County, since that "transfer train" usually runs solely in the other direction, it is refreshing to see GC finally get something in return from Ashland for all it has lost to Ashland through the years- past and recent.

The way I understand the Bylaw, even if the move was not for athletic reasons, the change of address has to come before enrollment in school. If a student transfered schools first, and then moved, they wouldn't be eligible and would have to sit out the year.

Ben Grisby trasferred from Pike Central to Greenup County. Now I might be a little of on this but he moved in I believed with his grand parents and was allowed to,practice during the spring and then in the summer. He also played in one game and then in week two I believe it was on a Friday he was told that the transfer was reversed and he was not allowed to play any more.

You are correct on that. That was a much different and more ligitamate case than this.

If the family makes a legitimate move into the new school district, the kid should be eligible to play.

I agree, but legitimate is the key word here, and I have to question the reason on this one.

In my view, a legitimate move is one in which the family officially changes residence, for whatever reason.

As is too often the case, the definition of "legitimate" tends to be in the eyes of the beholder and, if the beholder is KHSAA, the definition tends to be "adjusted" in accordance with the school(s) involved.
