Do we really need NASA?

Featured Replies

Because necessity is the mother of invention. All those things were invented by some really smart people as solutions to specific problems. Put a bunch of NASA engineers together to solve a problem and you get some great innovation. Put a bunch of inventors together just to see what they come up with, and you get an ABC reality show.

Not sure you really answered my question. What do space shuttles have to do with solving problems?

By its very nature, space exploration involves pushing the envelope of technology. In the course of developing and operating spacecraft, complex and difficult technical problems must be solved. The solution process often involves creating inventions that have far-reaching applications outside of the space program.

And would we have ever had Tang ??

Tang is another on the list of "you know you're older than the average BGPer..."

We agree on something! :dancingpa

In my view, the biggest problem with NASA is that they have a monopoly, at least in the US. I think space exploration should be allowed to be privatized, but NASA won't stand for that. They waste tons of money that wouldn't be wasted in the private sector. I'm not saying get rid of NASA. Just make them compete in the real world and earn their keep to some extent.

Plus, with that kind of competition, technological achievements and improvements will come that much faster.

That is true. Compare it to the space race of the 50s and 60s. We need some competition to get things rolling faster.

You all can ignore this one, I think I posted it in the wrong thread.

Haha, I was thinking "man, did Peprock put up something funny I was supposed to get, because... I don't get it".

Ooohhhhhh... you meant the drink.

I just read that NASA has requested a $10 billion budget for 2008. Couldn't that be halved and used elsewhere? What has NASA done for us lately? It just seems like an awful waste of money to me.

I have heard that there can be $100,000 of benefit including new technologies, for every $1 that has been spent on NASA throughout the years.

I agree. I can't imagine where a monopoly would be more innovative than a competitive system.

I'd vote to double their budget long before cutting it in half...
