Then why compete at all? At what point in time does a coach tell his/her players that they can't compete for a state championship? Seems like a bit of a defeatist attitude to me. If you think your school can't compete for a state championship then what does it matter to you who wins?

Surely you don't believe the only reason to participate in interscholastic athletics is to win a championship?

So, to you HS athletics is ALL about winning a state title?

I have 5 girl golfers with only ONE who has EVER broke 100. You won't me to sell to them that the reason they are playing golf is to win a state championship this year. That over the next 4 weeks, we are going to work so hard, they are going to each and every one shave 25 strokes off of their scores.

And that is the ONLY reason why they are playing HS golf.

That is the message you want me to send to my girls. BTW, 3 of them are MSers and 12 years old.

Last year, when no one had broken 110 before, our goal was not to win regional but finish top 5 in the region. We came 6 strokes away from that finishing 6th.

This year, our goal is for 3 to break 100 and the fourth to break 110, given us a chance at one of those two state tournament berths.

I don't believe that we have a chance to win state when Sacred Heart has five golfers, GIRLS remind you, that shoot in the 70's.

We would need to make a 100 stroke improvement from today till the first weekend in October.

Not at all. I worked at a very bad football school for 14 years and we always started the season believing we could compete for state. Definitely unrealistic but to do otherwise would in my mind be a defeatist attitude. BTW, I am very proud of the 14 years I spent there. We only made the playoffs 5 times (won one game) and won our district once.

A question, what would Prop 2 or Prop 20 do for your team?

This guy has to have another agenda. Did he get kicked out of a Private school once upon a time? Were his kids denied access to a Private school somewhere along the line? What is his obcession with the Private Schools?

And I use to think Administrators didn't care about SPORTS; only about Academics. Boy am I ever wrong.

I understand Mr. Sears used to coach at Bowling Green High and had athletes attend from several surrounding counties. I am not sure what the axe he has to grind. Maybe we should form a committee and do a little digging.....

For NKY schools in girls' golf, Prop 20 would remove Notre Dame and Villa Madonna from the region. I think they were the winner and runnerup in the region last year. It would also open the mindset of many NKY schools that they have more of a chance to earn that state tournament berth where Notre Dame and Villa was getting so many.

For my region, we have no private schools in our region that competes in girls golf. St. Patrick and Model (are they private?) neither have fielded girls' teams, so for girls' golf, Prop 20 would do nothing.

For Prop 2, I have long held that for rural schools it would do much of nothing and is mainly for urban schools.

Strive for improvement. Yes, certain teams have the mentality of winning the state as their ultimate goal, but not all schools or teams. Remember a school can opt out of competing for a state title and remain a member in good standing with the KHSAA. The membership chooses to compete for a state title in each sport.

Mr. Sears is the one who is making "winning a state title" the point of contention. If this was truly his point, then why not strive for classes in all sports (except basketball....wouldn't want to damage the cash cow)?

This discussion will continue from now on.....:thumb:

So how can you compete on a "fair and balanced" playing field? Your team loses because they are not as good as the other team. It's the same course right? Same rules? If your girls cannot score as low as the other team, they lose. The only way to get around this would be to not keep score. Give everyone a slap on the back and say good job.

Along with everything else, Sears needs to return to school and learn a little grammar. His communication skills are a disgrace. Is he really a superintendent?

Not the thread to do this in. There is a thread in the golf forum on changing the state tournament where we have discussed competing against schools that have unfair advantages. If you are interested, you can join the discussion there.

I don't want to get too personal but I understand Mr. Sears had at least one child that attended a Catholic elementary school.

I have a feeling that Mr. Sears thinks this got personal at around 11:17 this morning...

Oh My....I wonder what his message on the answering machine says.

Who decides if an advantage is unfair?

If I'm a basketball coach and the average height at my school is 7 feet is that an unfair advantage?
