I am not sure you watched much of USC if you think their defense was one of the tops in the country that season (regardless of their team ranking). I watched 10 of their games live... it was not a good defense and they were plagued by injuries. As for the thread, for what V. Young accomplished in his two season, especially on the big stage, I do not think it is a stretch to put him in the top 10-15 range. He was amazing and could completely control a game. Your link shows only USC stats. The pregame had Texas defense at no.7 and USC at like no.16. You're trying to say that they had a weak defense to support your argument.
August 23, 200719 yr Now that's one I had forgotten about. Very true. I remember once that Switzer opened up a pre-Orange Bowl practice to the media. Surprised, one of the media members asked him, "Aren't you worried about giving away your defensive schemes or something?" Switzer replied, "We know more about the Selmon brothers than anybody and we can't block them. There's nothing you're going to tell another team that will help them block them any better." Selmon was by far the best defensive lineman I ever saw in college.

August 23, 200719 yr One name that hasn't been mentioned, and I don't think he's the best ever, but he was an exciting player...Rocket Ismail. As for defensive stars, I really like Charles Woodson. He made huge plays for Michigan during his heisman season. Elvis Dumerville (sp?) wasn't half bad either...

In your link, it show that USC played at least 2 more games than half of those teams and 1 more game than at least a third. WOW! Keep in mind when finding "end of the season stats" that it doesn't account for the ranking leading up to the game. Vince might have dropped them 20 something spots with his performance alone. He does do that to defenses you know.

August 26, 200719 yr Earl Campbell and Jim Brown ran OVER people in college. I mean it was SCARY, it was men vs. boys. Defensively, Dick Butkus and Lawrence Taylor weren't too bad!
