Who will surprise?

5A district 8 should be fun. I hate to pick against the hometown cards but Whitley will win this district for the next few years to come.

I thought Clay County would be the favorite?

That's what makes it fun. It's wide open and you can make a case for several schools. I think you have to watch out for Letcher County, if not this year, in the near future. With the facilities and coaching staff they have, I've been waiting for them to blossom.

Clay is one of the overated teams in the area IMO. They will be second or I should say third fiddle yet again. I think South will be second.

Fairdale could have a good year

Thank you

I'm going to throw in Pineville, also, based only on the fact that they were at one time a good program and I have a lot of faith in Coach Elam to turn things around. I'm just not sure this is the year, but I think it will happen.

Another is Knox Central. This is year four of Wayne Mills' tenure and his fourteen seniors are the first class to come all the way thru his system. He has done a remarkable job turning around that program and if they had not been in the same district as Rock and Bell, would have turned heads already.

In the west, I'm going to say in :

1a, Fulton City will make some noise. They had a great year last year and return several key players from that team. They could well be the 2nd best team in Rgn 1, 1a this year.

In 2a, Heath could surprise some folks. they didn't have a very good record last year, but, played alot of the better teams close and have several key players back, as well.

In 3a, I look for Webster Co to be much improved and give Russellville all they want for the #2 spot.

In 4a, Lone Oak will be a sleeper. They have an outstanding QB and will put up alot of points. If they can improve on the defensive side, they could take the region.

In 5a, everyone keeps talking BGreen and Owensboro, as the favorites, but, don't be surprised to see WCentral or Hoptown take the region. WC will probably struggle early but I think they'll get better and better as the season wears on and could upset any of the favorites, while Hoptown will have enough athletes to compete with anyone, especially if they can shore up the defensive side.

In 6a, Apollo could surprise. Most people would favor Graves, Marshall or Henderson, but, imo, Apollo will have as much talent and could just as easily put it together as the others to win the region.

Lexington Christian will be very good this year. After speaking with Coach Rains I came away with the feeling he thinks this years team is special.

Fairdale should have really good team this year and could make a run deep into the playoffs.

I was curious about Montgomery County as well. They seemed to be much better on all fronts last season, but did they lose much to graduation? What are their current numbers like? One thing that might hurt the Indians is playing in a district with solid teams like Johnson Central, Woodford and Ashland. Mix in Bryan Station, who should be better and Montgomery could be much improved and still miss the playoffs.

They just left a district of GRC, Madison Central, Lincoln Co, South Laurel, Whitley Co. I think their new class and district will be a plus for them.

I think Washington County has the chance for a 7 or 8 win season.

I think that Bryan Station could suprise some ppl this year. They started the year slow but picked it up near the end of last season with a 7-6 loss against Woodford Co, a 6-0 loss to Tates Creek, and a respectable showing against Paul Dunbar. This team is full of athletes with exceptional size. I could see them finishing anywhere between 2-5 in the district this year but likely end up as the #3 seed.
