Why is someone an expert on foreign policy just because they are able to shill for enough cash and votes to get elected to public office? I'm not trying to make Peter Gabriel out to be some genius — heck, I wouldn't even consider myself a fan — but why is he somehow less qualified than some clown politician, just because he's a singer/songwriter?

Writing a song and solving world problems don't even begin to compare. If it did, Bob Dylan would be president and Joni Mitchell would be vice-president. I love music with political messages, but I hate when said musician thinks he's a politician. Bono comes to mind, drives me nuts.

He may annoy you, but his efforts have done a lot of good for a lot of very poor people who desperately needed it.

Toby Keith, for example, probably annoys folks who lean in the opposite direction.
