July 24, 200719 yr Stern denies NBA knew ref maybe was betting Commissioner holds news conference to address scandal regarding Donaghy MSNBC News Services Updated: 18 minutes ago NEW YORK - Calling the current gambling scandal involving one of its former referees, NBA commissioner David Stern called it the worst crisis he has had to deal with but denied a report that the league knew Tim Donaghy was gambling and continued to let him work games. Stern held a press conference Tuesday morning to discuss Donaghy, at the center of an alleged point-shaving scandal. The first question Stern must answer is what, and when, the league knew of the former referee’s gambling habits. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19868741
July 24, 200719 yr Lots of NBA games are tainted with in some way or another, regular season is too long and boring to be closely regulated. Other sports are as well, people think that as long as they don't change the outcome of the game who cares about the spread or over/under. If he starts blabbing and some mob/mafia get arrested they will take some more players/refs down with them.
July 24, 200719 yr I thought Stern did a below average job on the press conference. He always does IMO....
July 24, 200719 yr I am really surprised this thread isn't 5 pages by now. No one seems to care, but this could be the biggest sports story so far this century. How many pages would the thread be if the issue was fixing high-profile NCAA men's basketball games, rather than pro games? Say, for example, tainted refs working games in Lexington. I think that virtually every questionable call, whether it be in a college or pro basketball game, will be viewed with more suspicion than ever.

With all the off and on court problems, T's and so on....When will the fans say "Enough is enough" and stop buying tickets. Can anyone honestly say, they ever would have suspected an NBA ref, of possibly doing this?
July 24, 200719 yr Enjoy... You have to love how the commentators break the golden rule and openly question the officiating.
July 25, 200719 yr Enjoy... You have to love how the commentators break the golden rule and openly question the officiating. If they prove that he bet or tipped people to bet San Antonio in this game I don't know how the NBA recovers. This game could have decided the world champion.
July 25, 200719 yr ^ It more so decided who just won the West Finals but still a lot of fishy details going around.
July 25, 200719 yr ^ It more so decided who just won the West Finals but still a lot of fishy details going around. The two best teams in the post season last year were in the Western semis. The winner of that series was going to be highly favored to win the ring, and they did easily. He reffed a pivotal game 3 and Phoenix's stud center was in foul trouble all game. That's a BIG deal.

I'm just saying it decided the West Finals not the champion. Yes the West ended up winning but we can't say what woulda happened if the Suns would have won.
July 25, 200719 yr Now getting death threats. Thing could get way more serious real quick. I'd say it is real serious with the mafia reportedly being involved. We may see the ref go into the witness protection program. Is there a chance that the ref involved was working with the feds and supplying them with any info he had about any wrong doing or threats by other parties involved? I think this goes deeper than one guy. It is not impossible IMO for players names to surface as the story goes on.

Ok, no matter what if it comes out that either he bet or told others to bet the Spurs in game 3 it's a tremendous hit to the NBA. Should the Spurs get an * next to their name if something is found.

He did not whistle fouls 2 and 3, which sent Stoudamire to the bench early. He called 20 fouls that game, the other two called 42 fouls... nothing really out of the ordinary that game. From Bayless' point of view, the other two refs were a lot worse than he that matchup.
