NBA Ref under "Game Fixing" investigation

Featured Replies

I have often wondered about this type of thing and most often just wrote it off as "I've watched too many movies...", but now...

This might explain some of the crazy scenarios that have forced me to lose money I should've won on games.

Will the real Pete Rose please stand up.

Well thank goodness it wasn't Dick Bavetta...

I always thought Bavetta was under the thumb of the NBA, not the mafia!

If this ends up being true, it could ruin the NBA forever.

Who said it wasn't already??? NBA has been a snooze job since Bird and Magic.

I think there are only about 15 people in the world who don't think it was already ruined.

What about charges, excessive fouls on top-quality players, etc.? I think a referee (or umpire) could have a major say in the outcome of a game.

Same as a baseball ump or football official...they have more control over the outcome of a game than most realize and I would think they'd be the best targets for someone looking to fix a game.

This will become really interesting as things play out. I would say that alot of the team owners will become enraged when they find out that this guy through a game against their team.

You know this is big news when my mom calls to see if I was up to speed on the story...

Those studying Donaghy's games might have noticed some trends.

When the home team was favored by 0-4 1/2 points, it went 5-12 in games officiated by Donaghy this season, according to Covers.com, a Web site that tracks referee trends. Home underdogs were 1-7 when the spread was 5-9.5 points.

Donaghy was part of a crew working the Heat-Knicks game in New York in February when the Knicks shot 39 free throws to the Heat's eight, technical fouls were called on Heat coach Pat Riley and assistant Ron Rothstein, and the Knicks won by six. New York was favored by 4 1/2 .

He apparently was a ref during the Malice at the Palace.

Covers is an awesome website if you are into that stuff. Pretty intresting stuff.

Agreed, I can see this taking away offensive chances of one team but the shooting %, with a shot clock is hard to overcome.

Walks or allowing walks would affect play in the NBA. Call a lot of hand checking early and it limits what the defense can do in the NBA which means the defense would have to backoff early in the game and play a softer defense in the rest of the game.

It would be real interesting to know that in the games that Cuban was fined big bucks for calling out the officials whether this guy was an official in that game.

^ Cuban said some stuff happened at the Finals that he didn't want to comment on and was one of the reason's he nearly sold the Mavs. Could this be one of them. Wonder if that guy did any Finals games.

The interview in a couple weeks with Mark Cuban will definitely be worth watching!

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe they said he's done playoff games, but never an NBA Finals.
