Right now even with the so called improvements in Ky High school sports coverage by the Enquirer their efforts still fall way short in this endevour . The local Recorder papers do a better job .

 

You do realize that the Recorders are owned by the Enquirer and they share info / stories...right? Notice at NKY.com that both stories are listed there? NKY posts stories both from the KY ENQ and the Recorder Papers (and, for now, the KY Post).

I knew this was coming. I hate to see it though. I felt the Post did a better job covering KY sports than the Enquirer does.

This is what I sent. It was in regards to the Northern Kentucky All Stars for Basketball.

 

"I was looking in the paper this morning and saw the listing of the Northern Kentucky High School Basketball All-Stars. I just have one question. If you are going to cover a school as far away as Pendleton County High School, which is 33.44 miles from the 312 Elm Building, then why can't you cover schools like Gallatin County (38.53 miles) or Grant County (35.32 miles) away from your offices. You even put Williamstown in your basketball scoreboard and that's even farther away than any of the rest at 40.23 miles.

 

When the Post goes away, there will be no coverage of these schools in the southern part of your reading area. As far as I know, they still sell the Enquirer in Warsaw and Dry Ridge as well as places like Owenton and Carrollton KY.

 

When Gallatin County's boys basketball team went to the All "A" State Tournament at EKU, you already had Ryan Ernst there. The only story about Gallatin County came when they played Brossart. That's just wrong.

 

Teams like Simon Kenton and Walton Verona are in the 8th region. It would be nice to see coverage of the other teams that they play as well. The schools like Gallatin County, Grant County and Owen County are more and more playing the schools from Northern Kentucky like Lloyd, Ryle, Ludlow, Newport, etc. Gallatin County's baseball team has just come off playing Holmes, St. Henry, Ludlow and Villa Madonna and are scheduled to play Bellevue, Calvary Christian, Simon Kenton and Lloyd.

Yes. Print media is a permanent documentation of the first draft of history. A Web page can always be changed or updated an infinite number of times.

 

There aren't many recordings of the nightly news from just a year ago, but you can always go to your local newspaper and research issues from fifty years ago or more if you want.

 

I know that Jim Schue as talked about another regional newspaper in the past. Something like what the Challenger was suposed to be like.

I agree with most of the posters, the POST had the best sports coverage in Northern Kentucky, newsprint and pictures! I hope the Enquirer will expand its Northern Kentucky staff.

The KY Enquirer has improved leaps and bounds in NKY prep coverage from where it was three or four years ago while IMO the Ky Post has steadily declined in that time span.

 

Years ago the KY Post was easily the best in NKY prep coverage but I think the KY Enquirer has done a much improved job in the coverage mostly due to Ernst and using other writers like Russell.

I will miss the Post's coverage of local hs sports, too... but, hey we've got BGP!!!

I agree - even as a 30+ year Post reader. Ryan Ernst , either on his own or at the urging of the Sports editor, has done yoeman's work. The blog he does is a great supplement to daily/weekly coverage.

I for one would hate to see the demise of the local paper in Maysville. While I will occasionally supplement the Ledger-Independent (published 6 days a week; not bad for a town of 8,000) with an occasional copy of a Lex or Cincy paper; there's no substitute for the local paper to get the local news.

 

Since I've been in Maysville - all of my adult life - the paper has sure changed a lot. It wasn't all that long ago that you could get caught up on who was admitted to and discharged from the hospital. Many of the little communities in Mason County had their own little columns; e.g. "The Sardis News". You always knew who visited whom and who took a shopping trip to Maysville.

 

Now the paper tries to keep something of a local flavor, but also carries a variety of op-ed columns; from Clarence Page to Michael Reagan. While sometimes a day late, the Maysville paper does a decent job covering state, national and world events. The Post announcement is on Page 3 today, as a matter of fact.

 

On the local side, reporters get to local school board, city and county council meetings, zoning board meetings, etc. like clockwork. Local sports coverage is decent; although some might argue that there is too much southern Ohio coverage and not enough from Bracken, Fleming, Lewis and Robertson counties.

 

And of course, the classified section is invaluable. Where else are you going to find out where the good yard sales are, or where to buy horses (and hay for your horses)? Today's paper has four solid pages of classifieds; including the weekend's local auction notices (a staple of the Wednesday paper). Sure, there's an online version, but it's abbreviated.

 

The only feature I really don't like (but I know it sells papers) is the "Comment Line", which is essentially a forum for folks who want to complain but don't have the backbone to sign their name on a letter to the editor.

 

So count me among those who do not see newspapers ceasing publication as a good thing!

I hate to see the Post go because of the good N. Ky sports coverage, but I have to agree that the Enquirer has done a much better job as of late covering N. Ky sports. Ernst does a great job and on top is one heck of a nice young man (even though he's a CovCath grad...........................just kidding. I know he didn't graduate from CovCath and I just want to jerk his chain a little bit if he reads this site). I hope that the Enquirer continues to improve their coverage of N. Ky sports after the Post is gonesville, and doesn't resort to the former bad coverage when there isn't any "competition".
