9th region???

Featured Replies

are you saying HHS Holmes and Boone are the only teams that compete for the 9th region title

No just being facetiuos to the OLDGUY. That someone can make a general statement about there being 1 to 3 teams a year competing for a regional title and he feels the need to try and disprove their opinion.

The fact is that it usually does comes down to 1-3 teams a year.

When was the last time a team outside of the ranked top 3 in the final polls won a title? Or a team outside the pre-season top 3 for that matter?

well your right that definatly has not happened in at least 5 years probally more than that... I dont really remember how high the Holmes team of 2002 were ranked at the beginning of the season... i believe that the NCC team of 2004 may have been ranked #4 behind NDA, Boone and Holy Cross... but thats the best i can do

HC never did anything but they were in the mix for 3 yrs running w/the so-called big three players(Bass, Lantry and Noll)

????? Anyone hear that Miller from Dixie was moving across the river????

Holy Cross has won 6 All "A" region titles in the last 10 years and 3 of the last 4....

But now that Noll and Lantry are gone they are really struggling and not to mention they just lost there coach a year ago... They had a very good run but i think that they will be lucky to win 10 games this year...

Sacred Heart on NCC, Boone, and NDA schedules...

It would really build up girls b-ball in NKY and maybe keep some kids in their home district.

No he said that NDA, NCC and Boone were the top three, and he was hoping that HHS, and Holmes jump into the mix, as well as Conner and Ludlow. I just tried to show everyone that NDA, and NCC aren't really the members of the big three at all, and that Conner has won the 9th as many times as NDA and more times than NCC.

NCC06, it really doesn't matter where you are ranked in the preseason, it really doesn't matter where you are ranked during the season, as being ranked high in the AP/Coaches Polls don't get you into the Swett Sixteen. Getting into the Sweet Sixteen is the goal of every team at the start of the season or at least it should be, and NDA, and NCC just haven't been there like some tend to think. So if every teams goal is to get to the show, and NDA and NCC have only been there a combined five time since 1978, well I wouldn't say they are a top team.....at least history, and banners hanging on the wall don't tell me that.

You just can't say WOW this team or that team always seems to win, when in reality, that really isn't the case....Maybe over the course of the last couple of years, but not over the rather short history of Girls High School Basketball in Kentucky.....

You all realize don't you, that this thread is most probably as long as any thread in the Girls Basketball Forum, even during the regular season.....and that, is indeed a shame. More ladies basketball fans need to post in this forum, as the girls game is getting better and better each and every year. Not many teams of the 70's, 80's or maybe even in the early 90's could beat the teams today....and you really can't say that about the boy's game today, at least IMO you can't..........

Congrats to all fine young ladies and their coaches who are bringing the quality of basketball to a much higher level, than it ever has been on the girls side.

You hope Holmes and HHS jump in also? cshs81, didn't you read my post? Both teams have won the 9th Region in the last eight years, and in fact a total of three times. 00, 01 and 02 so thats just short of half of the last eight years that those two team have won it all, and btw Holmes was in the finals this year and almost made it four of the last eight for HHS and Holmes....

cshs81, it gets worse since 1990! I found that these teams won the 9th Region:

Conner 90 & 91,

Dixie 92,

Holmes 93 & 99,

HHS 94, 95, 96,

Boone 97 & 98.

So lets recap to see who has won the 9th Region the most since 1990 from the big three that you mentioned:

(5) Highlands 94, 95, 96, 00, and 01

(4) Boone 97, 98, 04, and 06

(3) Holmes 93, 99, and 02

(2) NCC 03 and 05

(2) Dixie 92

(2) Conner 90 and 91

(1) NDA 07

Well I be darned! Two of your teams that you hope get back into the mix have won the 9th Region a combined eight times out of the last eighteen years. Not bad and congrats to, HHS and Holmes, while the big bad Boone, NDA and NCC have won it a total of seven times, with big bad NDA only winning it only once, and NCC only wining it twice, during the same period.... WOW...... Talk about how NDA and NCC have dominated the girls game in the last eighteen years and if you want to go back even further, NDA and NCC have only won it a combined two times since 1975 the start of the sweet sixteen for the girls. So I would be a little careful about calling NDA, NCC among-est the top teams. Yes maybe in the last couple of years, but when you consider since 1978 not so much......compared to HHS and Holmes.....

BTW just to remind you, your Cougars have won the 9th as many times as NDA has (3) times each....

Kudos to you for your research. However, again, recent history says that every year coming into the season, the same 3 (maybe 4) are talked about. My point is simple. I hope MORE teams can jump into the discussion of who the top teams are. We can't have NDA and Boone and NC dominate discussion seemingly every year COMING INTO THE SEASON if we want to say the 9th is a strong region. We need the other teams to be in that discussion EVERY YEAR or close to it.

Who said anything about since 1978? You and I might be the only ones to remember back that far.

That being said this year will be the deepest the ninth region has been in many years 6 maybe 7 teams can compete for the title...

I wonder who has the best winning percentage over the last 10 years?

Winning percentage may be a poor indicator of program strength.

How do you factor in strength of schedule? Most of the scheduling is dictated by the conference and, (in all but one stupid district), district seeding accounts for another 2 or 3 games. This leaves quite a disparity in scheduling between AAA, AA and A conference foes.

To the defense of Ludlow's schedule strength, as well as other small conference schools, this leaves only a handfull of games left to schedule.

Comparing winning percentage between NDA, Boone, Conner and maybe NCC would be somewhat indicative because of similar scheduling but I'm sure there would be some anomalies in this data.

Winning percentage may be a poor indicator of program strength.

Excellent point and the reality of it is the key strength indicator is winning the Ninth and making it into the sweet sixteen. That is the true prize and one that is almost indiscribable until you have been to Diddle and felt the electricity.

It must be a real treat to the girls who have had this experience on the WKU floor. I'm sure the All A is equally as rewarding for the smaller schools.

I don't consider winning titles 10-20 years ago as qualifying as being a CURRENT power. Going back to 2000 is fine, but further back than that is ancient history. That's like saying UK men's team is a current power because they were outstanding in the late 90's. The teams mentioned in the post as current powers have won the LAST 5 titles, I think that was what was intended.
