Okay, I know that you know that much of the value of a baseball player can't be read from a "box score." Like working a 2-out walk in a 10 pitch at-bat to keep an inning alive, an inning that saw Keppy score 2 with a single. Right? I mean you get "value" like that -- right?

I don't think anyone here doubts the worth of Adam Dunn to this ballclub. And thanks to everyone (especially 98) for the lesson on reading the box score, as 98 as told me before, he's forgotten more about baseball than I'll ever know.

 

I'll stay on record as saying Dunn won't be here next season. Can't afford him. The Reds have had time to try and build around him and Junior and it's not working. Granted Dunn has been playing the best he's been in a Reds uniform, but is it because he doesn't feel any pressure anymore and feels he's going to be traded? Is it because Junior is finally healthy for an entire season and hitting ahead of him? Maybe it's Brandon Phillips hitting inteh cleanup spot?

 

I just can't see the Reds committing $13 million to him next year and not fix their bullpen problems or make the club a more balanced team in terms of offense and pitching. There's not much on the FA market for bullpen help, but why not give up EE, Freel, Hatteberg for bullpen help and use Dunn's money to plug the holes?

 

Maybe I'm wrong, highly unpopular, but I don't see Dunn being worth the kind of money he wants and what his option is in terms of defense and being an all-around player to build a franchise around. Give me more players like Brandon Phillips and Josh Hamilton, who are balanced hitters with speed and power.

 

But hey, let's keep Dunn and take up his option for one more season in Cincinnati and be in this same spot next year, not being able to trade him and the Reds losing.

Yeah, Hamilton is super. Can't stay healthy and hits about what Dunn does (minus the consistent power, on-base pct., and runs scored) when he is around. But yeah, why not.

 

Brandon Phillips, the guy that makes the last out on the field and none of his team-mates will bring out his gear, but again, yeah, why not.

 

If you don't think, given the landscape of baseball and comparative salaries, that Dunn wouldn't be a bargain at $13 million than I don't know what to tell you. I'd say there is a better chance you see Dunn getting a 5 year $60 or $65 million dollar deal than traded; I really do. Griffey'll be here, tops, one more year, and then they'll be ready to be consistent contenders starting in '09.

 

Been my opinion all along and I'm sticking to it. If I'm wrong I'll admit it and be disappointed. Simple as that.

On a side-note, can anyone else get their arms around the fact that apparently Bowden and the Nationals are doing everything in their power to consummate a Dunn trade? I mean I realize that they'd like a "marquee" player as they move into their new digs, and I realize they have hit fewer home runs this year than Dunn and Griffey combined (that mausoleum they are in is a big factor), but does LeatherPants really think he can convince Dunn to sign their long-term? I see no sign that they are even as close to contending as the Reds. Plus, whenever he has been asked the last few weeks, Dunn reiterates that he wants to stay here. I just can't believe that the Nationals' owners will let Bowden roll the dice by ripping their farm system to shreds in the "hope" of convincing Dunn to sign in D.C. long-term.

 

Plus, would Wayne, in his last 2 months on the job, even want to deal with Bowden. Not to mention, will Castellini / Williams let Wayne trade Dunn at all (I still say no), let alone to the ex-GM of the club.

 

Puzzles me.

One more thing, did anyone see Bill Stoneman (GM of the Angels) confirm that his team "would add an impact bat" by the deadline? Dunn and Vladdy batting back-to-back....wowza.

Kick Hamilton when he's down, that's being a true fan. He's just been out of baseball for how long and came back this year to really open eyes. Everyone will be back on his bandwagon when he's healthy again.

 

I won't argue with you about Phillips and what his teammates may think of him. Still, he's vocal and that's something other players in the clubhouse haven't been in years and I'm sure it rubs others the wrong way. That was his baggage in Cleveland. Still, he's a winner.

 

I'll stand by this and like you, if I'm wrong I'll admit it, but here goes: Dunn's a bargain for $13 million option and the math works as you presented. But to sign Dunn longterm and not address the pitching needs of this club with Dunn's propsed money over the long haul may sink the Reds much like Junior's contract hurt the Reds the past 8 seasons.

 

You can only hope the farm system yields some bullpen help, a closer, and a couple starters to go with Harang/Homer/Arroyo (if he's not traded) to help the pitching staff if you sink money in Dunn.

 

You're not going to get much for Dunn if you trade him...You may be in the same boat next season if you only pickup his option and try to trade him then. I don't believe the Reds will commit longterm money to Dunn.

Must keep Dunn....simple. He hits 40+ homeruns a year, his on base is great, he will strike out a lot, but you know what ur getting.

I'm not big on getting teary eyed for people that come out of self-inflicted stupors. I'm happy he is clean, trust me, I really am. Hope he stays that way. I love his defense. How could you not? However, I think there is a 50/50 chance he spends April of 2008 in Louisville. He has a ton of tools, but he is not ready (mentally, physically, emotionally) to contribute up in the bigs. Heck, who knows (GT 2007) if his body will ever be normal again after all of the garbage he pumped through it. If he becomes the next Mickey Mantle (pun fully intended) I'll be happy as a Reds' fan, but I won't be on his band-wagon.

 

Regardless, there are more if's around him than you can shake a stick at, forgive me for not being ready to anoint him the next anything.

 

One more thing, I still think in '09 he, Jay, and Dunn are the starting OF.

1-4 is .250 so his avg shouldn't have gone up to .269. I'll book the .270 bet.

Apparently the Reds have been consistently scouting their Potomac "A" team that is loaded with top-flight young prospects. I'm guessing the package of 3 - 5 guys would be from there. Or maybe 2 of them and Chad Cordero.

 

Just guessing.

 

If he goes (see previous 12 pages of posts ) I'd say it is to Washington (still don't get it), Angels or the Yankees (where I've said all along he makes the most sense, however, where I think he'd wilt horribly in the glare of the NY media / fan-base -- although that short porch in RF would be silly). I'm guessing if Shelley Duncan bombs in the next 3 or 4 days than the Dunn leverage goes WAY up.
