CBC - Stop all the guards for awhile

just 4 fun

Being the relentless recruiter he is, I know Coach Gillispie isn't about to stop hammering at the top targets, but, we need bigs alot worse than guards.. Look at our 07, 08, 09, 10 potential guards.. We're already as deep as can be there. then look at our C/PF/SF positions and it doesn't look near as deep or talented. I've been the 1st to say bring in the best possible players, regardless of position, but, in looking at the imbalance in depth and talent, I think it's time to place what limited schollys we have left the next 2 years more on needs vs talent...What does everyone else think?

The wild card we can only guess at is who will still be on the roster at this time next year. If, say, Porter and Jasper leave then it's not as guard heavy as it seems. Everyone needs more size, but there just isn't a ton of it out there...

I think the way Patterson is used this year, and the success (or lack of) that he has will affect UK's recruiting of frontline players. If Patterson is showcased and plays well, it should encourage other bigs to take a strong look at UK...if it's the opposite, it could possibly hurt our recruitment of 4's and 5's. Like GT said, there is much more depth nationally with regards to guards and swing players than there is for really good post players, so it might be a little tougher to land those guys.

A bigger key, IMO, will be his ability to develop project players and lesser known players into quality contributors in the frontcourt, because you just can't rely on being able keep a stud down low every season.

Great guards = success deep in NCAA tourney!

Very true! It has been exposed over recent years that every team who makes a deep run into the NCAA tournament has great guard play. The college game is controlled by the play of the guards wheras the NBA is dominated by player down low.

Which makes perfect sense after a team controlled by two bigs and a wing won the last two titles...

Two bigs and a wing...

...and arguably the best PG in college basketball, and a 2-Guard who was probably the worst of the 5, yet was the one you could least afford to leave because he was one of the best shooters we've seen in college basketball.

I'm not buying too much into that argument...trade Green and Humphrey for Bradley and Crawford and I wonder if Florida wins a title.

Green and Humphrey were good guards but they were far from great. The strength of that team was down low and on the wing. No denying it. And Green as the best PG in the game? I'll respectfully disagree and leave it at that...

Green may have not been the best, but then again was the floor general for 2 nat'l titles....I'll say he has to be up there with the best in the college game. No other college PG can say that right now.
