CBC - Stop all the guards for awhile

Featured Replies

Noah, Horford, May, Marvin Williams, Emeka Okafor, Elton Brand, Hakeem Warrick, Carmello Anthony. Notice a trend???

Hakeem Warrick?

Anyway, they all had great guard play to go along with their frontcourts. May and Marvin Williams had McCants and Felton...Okafor had Ben Gordon.

Elton Brand didn't even win a title, unless I'm mistaken. In any case, Duke's backcourt in his best season was William Avery and Trajan Langdon...not bad in my book.

As for Carmelo, it's hard to use these once-in-a-blue-moon type talents as trendsetters, IMO. He was a rare talent, who could do it all inside and out. But, the 'Cuse did have a freshman PG that year who shot lights out on the biggest stage, draining 25 footers, so they had good guard play too.

Again, I'm not arguing that you don't need both, just saying good guard play minus a frontcourt will give you a better chance than the opposite. That's just my opinion. You'd be hard pressed to win big in either situation, but with guards, you have a chance that they can get hot and carry you through (Arizona 1997)...with a just a big man, you have no chance because he depends on guards to get him the ball. Of course, there is no guarantee even with both (see Tim Duncan and Randolph Childress).

No, give me a team loaded with NBA draft picks (UNC - May, McCants, Williams, Felton...or Florida - Noah, Brewer, Horford, Green, Richard), there's your trend...teams with 4 and 5 NBA draft picks typically win titles. Or a team with a once-a-generation performer like Carmelo Anthony and a solid supporting cast.

Ahh...I was just in a mood to argue with you a little bit. It's been awhile, but some things never change. I still can't win.

But you can hold your own. Which is much better than most... ;)

That's a pretty chicken and the egg argument there.

Were the oh-fours lottery picks because they won the title twice, or did they win the title twice because they were lottery picks?

Was Yi a lottery pick because he dominated a chair??? :p

Word out of Milwaukee has him dunking over barcaloungers...

So can we call this the first official knock on BCG? Did it really only take 3 months for fans to start second guessing him?
