June 7, 200719 yr So if they would have asked him that and he answered: If my wife was to go in labor during the finals I would be right there by her side because there is nothing in this world more important to me than my family. I want to be there and see my 2nd child brought into this world and if I miss the playoffs on that night then so be it. Someone would criticize him over that? For example, when Vince Carter went back to UNC to actually walk through his graduation, he was blasted for missing the game winning shot against New Jersey when he was in Toronto. IMO, Lebron should be right there holding her hand while she is giving birth to his child, whether it is during a game or not! :thumb: :thumb:I understand now what you and UKMF meant. June 7, 200719 yr Let's see was my Dad there when I was born? I couldn't tell you. Was he a good parent and role model the other 45 years of my life I was lucky enough to have him on earth .Yes. I think this is relevent to the conversation. Calling him less of a man or parent because he chooses to do his job doesn't seem right to me.

June 7, 200719 yr Athletes miss the birth of their children all the time.....Why's it such a big deal when LeBron does it? They do? I can remember countless athletes leaving their team to be with their wives during birth. Listen, it's his call, and doesn't affect me one way or the other, but I can promise you there is nothing in my life that I would have thought twice about doing if it meant not seeing my son born. I know, I know, you come back with "you've never played in the NBA finals." You're right, but there are many things in my life that are very important TO ME and they wouldn't stand a chance.

I'm against anyone missing the birth of their child or any other important happening for a sporting event or some other frivilous(sp?) event. I'm not just picking on Lebron it's just he's the latest to do it. Derek Fisher missed almost a whole playoff game to be with his daughter who was having surgery, looks like he had his priorities straight!
June 7, 200719 yr If his girlfriend is ok with his choice then good for them. :thumb: If they've already discussed it, and she's okay with it, I don't see the issue. If I were in her position, I would say "I got this. Good luck at the game," and you better believe it would be on TV in the delivery room. JMO Plus, I don't agree that Lebron is being selfish or self-centered by not wanting to miss a game of the NBA finals. Him missing a game affects many others, not just himself.

June 8, 200719 yr One reason I still have a small bit of respect for Mark McGwire in spite of his clamming up at the Senate hearings on steroids was his standing up and being at the birth of his son his rookie year. He missed his final game of the season and ended up with 49 home runs when he had a chance to hit number 50. When asked about missing that opportunity McGwire said, "I will have other chances to hit 50 home runs but only one chance to be at the birth of my child." Family has to come first and I pray that nothing goes wrong during that child birth because he will have to live with that the rest of his life.
