What's the main tool you use in your job? Mine's a computer. Most of ours is. School is to prepare you for your future job. Today the majority of us are dependent on computers, imagine what it would be in 20 years.

To not utuilize the tools (computerS) in school would put us (USA) even further behind the curve.

If it wasn't for Google, I wouldn't know what "Orwellian" referred to.

No, that would be vocational school. I think school is supposed to fill you with knowledge and build your ability to reason and think.

Agreed 100% . Too many kids/adults today cannot do simple math in their head. Most don't know how to tip so they either guess way too low or way too high. Can't calculate sale prices if given in a percentage off format. Can't determine how much change they should receive. Can't even begin to use estimating skills. Fractions? Are you kidding me! Estimating fractions as a percentage? Help!!!!!!!!!!

 

If all you have to know is how to punch in a number on a calculator, you have not learned how to do math.

I remember purchasing a beverage at Riverfront Stadium, the concession didn't have a register or a calculator and it took quite a while for them to figure out my change.

For the LARGE % of kids who don't have a computer at home, I would guess it adds A LOT to their knowledge of computers.

In today's society, school is a tool for the politicians to change at a whim and get elected by telling us how bad it was and how good it is going to be under them.:irked:

 

In the 18 years I have been teaching the method that is used to judge whether schools in KY are doing well or not has changed approximately 10 times.

I guess I'm on the other side of this topic. My computer has opened the doors to jobs that never existed and close friends it's likely I would have never met. On most of the things I used to Google I now have the site needed bookmarked and can get the information needed with a few clicks. I was going to find the information needed either way, and there is a lot of time saved in this process..

Probably right, like pre-programmed phone numbers, cell phones, IPods, calculators, etc....we're dependent of the technology.

It would be bad if someone hacked into a major server network and destroyed it, causing us to go back into the Medieval times.:creepy: :scared:

As you know better than most, the Internet has opened huge doors for me. Not only in all the amazing things BGP has offered; but in many other occupational, educational, and recreational ways. So I'm by no means "anti-computer." My life wouldn't be what it is without them. Come to think of it, it might not BE at all...
