June 2, 200719 yr I remember purchasing a beverage at Riverfront Stadium, the concession didn't have a register or a calculator and it took quite a while for them to figure out my change. ....because they "learned" how to do subtraction with a calculator.

LBBC - you are not going to try to tell me that letting kids use calculators in school to do basic multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division is actually "teaching" them math, are you? Its a disservice to them . Its not even debatable. We're creating a society of non-thinkers. "I can't give you change, sir, because my calculator/register is broken. I was never taught to THINK. My teacher just told me what little buttons to hit and ,poof, out came the right answer. How much change should I give you?"

You have to have an idea of what the answer should be before you ask the machine for your answer. If you don't understand the underlying principle, then letting the student use an electronic device is a real disservice.
June 2, 200719 yr I personally ran into this problem not to long ago. I went to visit my son and to watch an event that was going on a the University. I drove over to my friends house and rode the rest of the way with him. When I got there I realized that I had left my phone in my car. Had no idea what my son's phone was had to just go looking for him. It's in my phone, no need to remember it!! LTW that my friend is called getting old......:thumb: See you in August... HS, let them use calculators. If they hadn't learned it by then, they aren't going to because with the requirements in Math of this state they are going to be taught it anymore. They have to have Geometry, Alg I and II instead.

June 3, 200719 yr I think, if anything, the internet has expanded my knowledge. I can get online and learn about any number of things. If I hear something and I don't know anything about it, I can google it and and have that information forever. I know about an infinite number of things just from learning online, looking things up I didn't know, or just surfing around. I see the calculator argument, but it isn't comparable to the internet at all.
