May 30, 200719 yr First, I have nothing against the elderly. I’m not trying to sound cold or callus either. Having said that, don’t you think people over the age 60 should have to start testing to continue driving a vehicle? Some of them suffer from dementia, vision problems, motor skill problems and many other difficulties that make driving a challenge for them. They put themselves and others at risk of injury or worse. I know it’s one of their last freedoms they have left, but I think something needs to be done. Any thoughts?
May 30, 200719 yr I agree with ya pal. My grandfather just died a couple months ago at age 69. He drove everyday and I'll admitt, it was tough for me to get in a vehicle with him. I worried about him behind the wheel. He just didnt have the motor skills at that age to be on the road. I loved the man to death but when he drove it was unsafe for him, whomever else were in the car and anyone else on the road. I think after a certian age you should have to take a driving test every year or two.

It's not that they don't know, it's just that they aren't able to carry out the actions... And I agree completely. Some elderly folk are just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than a 16 year old who just got their license.

How many times do you hear about an elderly person driving the wrong way on a ramp or highway or expressway? Too many for me.

I do agree, I usually see them going entirely too slow on the expressway and/or in between lanes. But I also see multiple people run red lights and stop signs everyday. I don't worry about my driving, I have to worry about all the morons around me.

May 30, 200719 yr I believe some states already have laws where once you hit a certain age, you're retested every so many years. I think this is a great idea, but the test needs to be a little more advanced than the one I passed 'x' years ago. IMO, all states need to do something like this.
May 30, 200719 yr Interesting this was brought up today. In Cincinnati a group of elders, all above 80 were in a serious crash today. Apparently the driver, age 84 entered the expressway heading in the wrong direction. The collided head on and had to have the jaws of life free them from the car.
