When do you think Lexington will compete?

Featured Replies

Well see the past two times PLD has played a Lou. school besides trinity, they too were in rebuilding years. '04 and '06, Manual and PRP.

Dunbar played PRP in 05 and won 38-28. Which if I'm not mistaken that was the larger victory over PRP than what Male and St. X did against PRP. I'm not saying Dunbar was better than Male or St. X but they were clearly better than PRP.

To objectively refute The Golfers position, Louisville schools, spearheaded by Trinity, have dominated 4A football throughout its existence. Remove Trinity from the mixture, and Male and X would be dominant. Examine the record since 2000:

Male

2006-At a minimum, 2nd best team in the state. Highest computer rankings. One loss-Trinity-in a game that went down to the last play. The only non-Jefferson County opponent was an excellent Hopkinsville squad. Final score: Male, 56-7.

2002-14-1 record. Only loss: Trinity, 59-56, in a state championship game many feel is the greatest ever played in Kentucky. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents: Hopkinsville, Highlands, Lex. Cath, Owensboro, Nelson County, Henderson County. No game closer than 11 points.

2001-Runnerup to Trinity. Record v. non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents: 5-1. Hopkinsville, Highlands (Male by 30), Lex Cath, Meade County, Owensboro (twice).

2000-State champion. Record v. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents: 4-0. Beat Hoptown, Oldham County, and Nelson County (twice). Closest game v. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents: 20 points.

X

2000- Lost only to Male and Trinity. Record v. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents: 4-0. Beat Madison Central, Bullitt East and Meade County by 32 or more. Also beat North Hardin.

2003-State runnerup to Trinity. Record v. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents:3-1. Loss was by 5 points.

2004- State champion. Record v. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents:7-0. Beat Scott County(twice), Lex Cath, Meade County, Nelson County, North Hardin and Henderson County. North Hardin lost to X by 14: all others by 25 or more. X won two by 50+.

2005- State runner up to Trinity. Record v. Non-Jefferson County Kentucky opponents: 6-0.

Overall records against top out in state squads:36-2. The two losses were close (5 points). Many wins were by 40 or more. Since 2000, 12 of 14 teams in the 4A finals were T, X, or Male.

Make sure everyone knows that loss was to Lexington Catholic, 19-14.

I can smell sarcasm from a mile away but I have to ask.

How many schools in Lexington have their football players out 4 days a week doing speed drills and lifting right now?

How many schools in Lexington have had their football teams active in the mat room and lifting 4 days a week since the middle of January?

How many schools in Lexington have a summer schedule that includes 4 day a week workouts starting June 4 and continuing right up till practice starts in July with only the dead period off?

How many schools in Lexington will have 5 days a week of 7 on 7 including "games" every Thursday or Friday in June and July?

I know of one school in Louisville doing all of these things.

Here is the difference IMO. oldonetechnique replied that multiple schools in Lexington do this now. That is correct but there is a key word: NOW

I played for Bryan Station in the mid 90's, and without a doubt had the best collection of talent in the city, and probably the state. We never made it past Shaun Alexander and Boone Co. in the Region Finals, and our squad was vastly superior in talent, but they had the better team. The summer of my senior year, a small group of players would get together and work out, but my friends who played for Lexington Catholic were doing things that were a lot more structured in the summer. IMO, the reason that Lexington Football has not made up ground that I believe it will soon, is that the summer and off season structure has not been at the level it needed to be. Now, many High School programs are set up like small level colleges, and have to be to keep up. I didn't see that in the Lexington Public high schools when I played. The fact that it happends now is good, but I think it takes some time to have that type of setup develop your program.

Dunbar played PRP in 05 and won 38-28. Which if I'm not mistaken that was the larger victory over PRP than what Male and St. X did against PRP. I'm not saying Dunbar was better than Male or St. X but they were clearly better than PRP.

Also, in '03, PLD played Trinity almost down to the wire at Trinity in the state semi's.

^ Now that was a good team....the real key to beating us...is to take it right to us....play smash mouth, ball control...solid defense...and come right at us.

Which is more important, the score or the outcome?
For the purposes of this discussion, both ... Male and St. Xavier have consistently played Trinity tougher than the Lexington schools have. That pokes holes in your theory that only Trinity is superior to the Lexington schools.

Count titles instead of point totals and you might come up with the same thing.
Male and St. Xavier have won state titles this decade. Lexington's last one came in the mid-90s, if memory serves. That also pokes holes in your theory.
Central yes, but not Manuel.
Manual has been pretty good the last 2-3 years, probably even better than Central in the span ... maybe you haven't been paying attention.
That is it more than anything else. Although I would say that more often than not I would take the next tier of Louisville schools against Lexington schools.
You would win much of the time, I suspect.
That is head and shoulders better. 3 to 1 and 0
Two of those title games could have gone either way, which means they weren't "head and shoulders" better. Trinity was "head and shoulders above" the Lexington schools, however.

Westsider me and you are good buddies on here so I will make a point and you can call me a meat head or something if you want too :D

Most of the Louisville Schools have not played the best Lexington School of that season. For one there are only 5 teams in the county. Last year for example Male could have most likely beaten Henry Clay but it would be a great football game. Henry Clay had 2 or 3 special teams touchdowns on Trinity in that game which is un heard of. I honestly don't believe St. X would have beaten Henry Clay and the Trinity posters agree from the ones I have seen that last year Henry Clay was better.

In 05 Male was not nearly as good as they were in 06 getting beaten out of the playoffs by John Hardin. Could that team come to Henry Clay who was very talented then with Rod Johnson who signed with WKU and Minnifield who signed with Virgina not too mention Jeter who ran a kickoff back against Trinity in the 06 game?

The big thing that gets me is there is like 40 schools in Louisville. If one school in Lexington isn't better than all 40 of Louisville's schools including the private schools they get labeled as being awful. I assure you last years Henry Clay team was better than 95% of the schools in Louisville.

I'm not much on labeling teams with cities. We all are 100% different from one another and do differnt work out and schemes yet since their buildings are close to one another we lump Lexington vs. Louisville together.

04 was a very poor year for Lexington, I will be the first to admit that. From top to bottom not very good football was played that year in Lexington. Scott County won the region and they couldn't beat Lexington Catholic.

In 03 Dunbar was a solid football team. Gave Trinity all they could handle and many posters agree with that, and earlier in the season they beat a great 3A Mason County which had Grutza and Chris Lofton on the team.

In 02 Lets face it, it was the Michael Bush vs. Brian Brohm show. No one could compete with them.

In 1999 and 1998 Trinity was beaten out by a Lexington School. Talent comes and goes.

Actually it was 1991.....and it was Clark County...not a Fayette County school.

Lexington Catholic is the only Lexington School to win a Football title in over 20 years. Henry Clay, Dunbar, Bryan Station, and Tates Creek all made it to the title game in a 5 or 6 year period (95-00?), but all lost.

I dont know why it is like this right now, but Louisville schools are much better in football right now in general than Lexington schools are. When in basketball Lexington schools are better than Louisville schools. Ballard was very good this year and Male was good until one of their best players was injured, but Lexington with Bryan Station, Tates Creek, Lexington Catholic and even Lafayette and Henry Clay had some very good basketball teams.

Its called population....I'm sure if someone would do the research Ville schools have higher enrollment than LEX schools.

It takes quite a few more than 5 good players to make a quality Football team;)

Westsider me and you are good buddies on here so I will make a point and you can call me a meat head or something if you want too :D
No need ... the only meatheads here are the guys that make meathead points. ;)

Maybe Henry Clay would have beaten St. Xavier, maybe not. I suspect it would have been a close game.

Bottom line ... going by the scores of their respective games, Male and St. Xavier have been much more competitive with Trinity than the Lexington schools have over the years, despite the claims of a certain other poster with a Lexington background. The numbers I posted bear that out.

I suspect Male would have beaten Henry Clay just as Trinity did. For all of the Blue Devils' special-teams heroics, they still lost the game by three touchdowns. Male was inches away from beating Trinity.

You're right. I was thinking that Dunbar beat Nelson County, but they didn't.
