May 15, 200719 yr Someone comes to install something electronic at your house. He was there about an hour. Do you tip them? I did, he said it wasn't necessary, but he did a little extra then necessary, so I thought it was. My mom and wife say I'm dumb. What say you? I think it's the polite thing to do.
May 15, 200719 yr I use to argue with my wife when she tipped her hair dresser. I would say she is already getting paid. Now I tip my barber because she is a family friend. If your barber is a she, that might be a good policy. Although you might want to tip your wife as well, just to be safe.
May 15, 200719 yr I think it's the polite thing to do. Is that not his job though? He doesn't rely on tips to make a living. Same problem I have with the baristas at Starbucks. No way I'm tipping them. It's your job to make coffee, you shouldn't get paid above and beyond that. We don't pay McDonalds employees for flipping the burgers, do we?
May 15, 200719 yr If you've got a few extra bucks layin around and a person did an exceptional job why not tip them ? Who cares if they are getting paid already or not. No harm in being extra nice that day and maybe making someones day a little better.
May 15, 200719 yr None of the above, but isn't everyone getting paid already anyway? I tip my barber, he's getting paid a full wage already. If he is a cable guy and gives you free movie channels, you should tip.

Believe me, it is appreciated, and will be remembered on your next visit. As for your specific example, I would hardly compare a barista to a burger flipper.

May 15, 200719 yr Sure, but I don't tip for the services I mention but I do, if food is being delivered. Certain circumstances I do, while others I don't. I always tip my waiter or waitress, how much depends on how they work. If someone is working hard but is having a bad day I still tip good. You should always tip your barber or hairdresser. I say this not because my mother has a hair shop, well maybe. I have never tip a cable, satilite, plummer,ect... I have never really thought about it.

You're saying that you should tip not because the person has earned it, but rather so that you can get better service in future visits? I can understand that rationale.
May 15, 200719 yr I took the time out of my busy schedule to read your thread, I enjoyed topic and have even took the time to post a reply. Can you tip me?

May 15, 200719 yr Where do you draw the line on who you tip and don't tip? That is what I said to my wife on the subject.

May 15, 200719 yr Where do you draw the line on who you tip and don't tip? For me it is a gut feeling -- did they go above and beyond their job description to make my experience a little better? Barber? Always. Valet? Always BEFORE they take off in my car (I've heard too many horror stories about how they treat cars that don't tip / plus, why not tip in advance for someone else driving the 2nd most valuable thing you possess?). Heck, I bought pizzas for the guys at a garage that worked on my last car when it needed some work done because they got it done early (plus washed it outside and vaccuumed the inside at no charge). I would never (never say never, but probably never) tip someone that is working a register or a counter unless their service was exemplary and I received more than I bargained for. I've never been to a Starbucks, but I can't imagine tipping someone making my coffee (not a coffee drinker).
