Tipping question....

Featured Replies

Someone comes to install something electronic at your house. He was there about an hour.

Do you tip them?

I did, he said it wasn't necessary, but he did a little extra then necessary, so I thought it was.

My mom and wife say I'm dumb.

What say you?

If he's a Plumber, Electrician or HVAC....they're getting paid already.

If someone provides a service, does it well, and goes above and beyond the call of duty -- I tip. So in this case I agree 100% with you.

None of the above, but isn't everyone getting paid already anyway?

I tip my barber, he's getting paid a full wage already.

That's how I look at it too. Glad I'm not alone on this one.

I agree with you too.

If he went above and beyond what was necessary then yes I would give him a little something extra but otherwise no I wouldn't tip them.

I'll offer them a drink, but no way do I tip. Heck, they usually charge around $70 just to show up to your house. (I'm referring to an HVAC person as that's about all I've ever called to the house to work on something.)

There was no install fee. I'm sure he was being paid from the company but I didn't pay for it.

I've only really dealt with HVAC and GE people since living in my house. Both charge a service fee just to show up, so there's no way I'll tip. I do all my own electrical and plumbing work, so I'm not sure how they usually charge.

I use to argue with my wife when she tipped her hair dresser. I would say she is already getting paid. Now I tip my barber because she is a family friend.

Sure, but I don't tip for the services I mention but I do, if food is being delivered.

Certain circumstances I do, while others I don't.

I have to agree with the two love's in your life on this one.If they are working for minimum wage and rely on tips as other income than yes.

I don't think the types of employees that 98 is speaking of even expect tips.

I had an electrician in my home recently. I basically got a bill for 100+ dollars (based on a minimum hourly fee) to tell me that there was nothing he could do about my problem, the local elecrtical provider needed to fix the problem. The unions that control electricians, plumbers, carpenters etc. demand very big salaries and make it necessary for an elecrtial company to charge me 100+ dollars to tell me that they cant fix my problem. I feel no need to tip them regardless of how well they do their job. If they feel a need to supliment their salaries then let them stop paying union dues.
