April 30, 200719 yr After the tragedy at Virginia Tech, many European newspapers are blaming the gun culture in the U.S. which they call the most dangerous country on earth. Murders (per capita) by country. Murders by country.
April 30, 200719 yr The russians are pretty high on the list, maybe they should start giving their journalists a break:sssh: On a serious note, it's important to keep in mind their disclaimer, as that reality might not reflect the statistics that well: Total recorded intentional homicides, completed. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.
April 30, 200719 yr The prestigious honor of Most Dangerous Country on Earth would have to be awarded to Colombia. Hands down. No contest.
May 1, 200719 yr I don't really care what Europeans, especially European journalists, have to say about the culture of my homeland. "When they outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns." "You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers."

Murders (per capita) by country. Murders by country. Uh, hooray, we're right between Armenia and Bulgaria in murders per capita. Are we supposed to be happy with that? I mean, look at that list: 1. France is the first country on the list that matches what we think of as our Western World herritage (Portugal, which had a right wing dictator until a coup in 1974, does not, and as I mentioned Finland was controlled by the Soviets after WWII.) France is 40th, we are 24th. We have roughly 2.5 times their murder rate.

This is what happens in the United States.
May 1, 200719 yr As to the U.S., I agree that the murder rate is troublesome. I don't blame easy access to guns for it however. Even if it could be proven that it was easy access to guns that caused the high rate of murders, I believe the freedoms that we enjoy in this country, whether its freedom of speech or the freedom to practice the religion of your choice or the freedom to have a gun, are worth the negatives those things bring with them. The situation is somewhat analogous to a democracy; extremely inefficient method of governing, but the inefficiencies don't come close to outweighing the positives.
May 1, 200719 yr Gee, lets be more like France so we don't upset a bunch of effete emasculated Euro-wienie quitters...   Our country's problem is less a matter of guns and bullets than it is a growing vaccuum of sound spiritual grounding and solid morals. But hey, we've kicked God out of our schools and public places and taught our children it's okay to kill unborn children because they are inconvenient... so maybe our Euro-wussie friends can admire that. I personally enjoy the title as "Most Dangerous" but if we listen to these clowns, we won't be for long... which is exactly what they want.

I personally enjoy the title as "Most Dangerous" but if we listen to these clowns, we won't be for long... which is exactly what they want. Exactly! Very good post, I totally agree. If you look at violent crime in this country, you’ll find its mostly inner-city crime, black on black crime, kids that grew up in a culture of violence with little to no parental guidance. The problem isn’t guns, its lack of morals and lack of parental guidance.
May 1, 200719 yr Here's the real troubling part. The victim rates for whites was 3.3 per 100,000. For blacks it was 19.7. Others was 2.4. The offender rate is even worse. For whites its 3.6, blacks 24.1 and other 2.7. The good news is that murder rates are down across racial lines. Rates have dropped by over half for blacks from their highs in 1991. If the trend continues, we should drop on those world charts over the next 10 years.
May 1, 200719 yr Interesting Those numbers seem to clearly indicate "black on black" crime, AND bring up the same economic/policy debates that have been discussed for a LONG time. I am not alarmed however by our inclusion on that list. What is the answer? Gun control? Is that where this thread takes us?
