I think he is a clone of Byron Leftwich, and not nearly as polished as Leftwich was coming out of college.

 

He won't be a bum, but he won't be a starter. And once he and a few more QBs flame out, you'll see a lot less college QBs being drafted with the #1 overall pick.

#1 Practically all throwing motions are different, and I wouldn't call Leftwich's delivery ridiculous. I've seen a lot of NFL QBs whose throwing motions are far more mechanically defunct.

 

#2 Coming out of college Leftwich didn't have a bum knee, and at this point he was by far the better QB.

 

Plus, I can't think of anybody other than Leftwich and Culpepper that has the same body-type, and cannon for an arm. It isn't stereotyping, its more coincidence than aything else.

#1, no one i nthe NFL winds up like Leftwich, it was aconcern when he came out and it still should be.

 

#2, he hurt his knee in college. So yes he did. Ok it was his shin, injuries were a concern when he came out.

Being able to throw 60yds. from one knee will be of no help when he's flat on his back. I agree with the previous poster and the Dante Culpepper comparison. I don't think he'll adjust to the speed of the NFL as easily as the Raiders would like. I wish him luck. Last year, V. Young was able to dump off short and use his legs to attain a modest amount of success. I don't know if J.R. will be able to do either in Oaktown. Good Luck!

Jamarcus Russell will be a good QB. Not a pro bowler, but good. He played in the SEC 4 years so it's not like he didn't play against top level competition.

 

You can't really compare him to any other Qb with any of his attributes except his size. He has good mobility for how big he is and an arm better than probably 80% of the NFL QB's.

 

He has great support from his family and won't fall in to the trap of thinking he's bigger than the game. He'll stay focused and keep working and become a GOOD NFL qb.

I've never been sold on Russell...I thought he was overrated in college. I didn't like his performances in big games. Obviously, he's freakish from the physical standpoint, but that only goes so far at the QB position. I'm not sold that he has the intangibles to be what some are projecting. If he's as good as some say, I think he should have done more wiith the talent that surrounded him at LSU. But, that's just my take...if he puts the pieces together, he could be scary. What an arm! Also, Kiffin has been around some pretty good QB's and a pretty good coach (Chow), so he may be able to bring Russell along from the mental standpoint.

I think its appropriate to bring back up this thread now that Russell has been released.
