April 27, 200719 yr Barring a significant change, new Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith said he won't add any more players to the team's roster for next season. When Smith was hired from Kentucky on March 22, he said he wasn't going to add a player just for the sake of adding one, saying a player would have to be able to immediately contribute. After being on the job for a little over a month, Smith said he is leaning against adding another player. "We're not going to bring anybody in unless they can help us," Smith said. "It's tough finding somebody who can do that at this point. "If we don't, it would leave an extra scholarship for the next class, and we're recruiting some very talented players." http://www.startribune.com/512/story/1147470.html

Im sure he is going after very talented players, but if they turn him down then he never has a backup plan and then ends up having to settle for players like that....
April 27, 200719 yr "We're not going to bring anybody in unless they can help us," Smith said. "It's tough finding somebody who can do that at this point." Hmm.. Billy G seems to have found some people to go after.
April 27, 200719 yr Author Hmm.. Billy G seems to have found some people to go after. That's what I thought when I saw Tubby's comment, I don't know what the Gophers scholarship situation is, but no reason to say it's too late in the game.

Interesting that two names you mentioned are instate boys and Mr. Basketballs in which it has been argued that Tubby should have recruited more of.

April 27, 200719 yr That's what I thought when I saw Tubby's comment, I don't know what the Gophers scholarship situation is, but no reason to say it's too late in the game. Its Minnesota, not Kentucky.
April 27, 200719 yr Its Minnesota, not Kentucky. Exactly. It should be far easier to find guys who can contribute on a Minnesota level.
April 27, 200719 yr Exactly. It should be far easier to find guys who can contribute on a Minnesota level. But Tubby doesn't want to get Minnesota level guys, The whole point of rebuilding is to get higher level players.
April 27, 200719 yr Author Its Minnesota, not Kentucky. If it was coach Joe Schmo leading Minnesota, I would agree with you 100 percent. BUT with Tubby at the helm and his history of 20 win seasons, great teams and success, it does change things, if not right away, within a few years. YES, I know there are more than a few people on the board who might question my adjectives: great and success. I think you were making a point that there is no way a random kid is going to choose UM over UK, that's what I was thinking and what I responded to.
April 27, 200719 yr Tubby will have to work a little longer than a month to get any high level players to strongly consider going to Minnesota, regardless his name.

YES, I know there are more than a few people on the board who might question my adjectives: great and success. I agree, but this late in the recruiting stage and with Smith only being there a month it makes it much more difficult because it is still UM. But next year I think you will see a major change after he has had a year to prepare for the class of '08.
April 27, 200719 yr Tubby will do fine. There is not a large amount of pressure to win...next year. A few games will do.
