Raceland Coach Shawn Johnson Resigns

Featured Replies

I think Raceland assistant coach Scott Floyd would be an excellent replacement for Johnson. Coach Floyd is a hard worker who demands the most out of his players. I really think he is the right man for the job.

:thumb: Trimble would be a great hire. There are several that would be a good fit for the Ram program. J. Clark & E. Keeton are just a couple that I would also consider.

:thumb: I agree on all mentioned so far, I honestly would be suprised if they go out of house for a coach for the boys program. Imo there are 3 very qualified coaches already in the system. Bob Trimble, Jason Clark and Scott Floyd. Outside the school system now I would take a very hard look at Raceland grad and one of the all time great players in Eric Keeton (if he would be intersted) at GCHS. Imo all of these are well quaified.

IMHO, Trimble will stay right where he is...

You could be right incognito, I wouldn't blame him if he stayed at the helm of the Lady Rams or if he accepted the boys head coaching position if offered. Coach Trimble is a class act and excellent coach :thumb: . Coach Trimble is a man that we (Raceland) need to keep in the school system at any position.

It's a good job to have. Brand new gym, small school system, great fans, not an enomrous amount of pressure to win year after year.

:thumb: :thumb: Your are correct on this TRR. Raceland's facilities are second to none in the 16th region, have good athletes and should compete for the 16th Class "A" region title year in and year out. Put a team that will pay their hearts out coupled with a coach the community can and will respect and Raceland is a prize of a job for any coach.:ylsuper:

I know that Bobby Trimble loves the coaching job he has but I would love to see him take the boys job if offered to him. I played ball with him in high school and always thought he would do a great job as the boys coach and with the great job he did with the girls this year he showed that he is an excellent coach.

Many thanks to Coach Johnson for an outstanding job!!

I was on the Raceland School Board when Coach J. took over the program. He has never ceased to amaze me by getting the absolute most out of the talent he has had.:thumb:

I appreciate the time and effort that Coach Johnson has always given.

Best wishes to you and your family.

The coaching fraternity in the 16th region retires a good one! Shawn Johnson did an outstanding job bringing respectability and a good brand of basketball to Raceland. He was a master at preparation and put his teams in the best positions for being victorious. He competed at the highest level in the 16th region and his teams were among the best defensively. In addition to being a good coach, I think he picked up some rather good friendships along the way. Congrats and best wishes to a fun guy to be around.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but didn't he win the District in '94 @Russell vs. Russell in his first season? Things are a bit hazy now but I think won that one and the one in '03. I may be wrong but I think that was the game Jeremy Calhoun, who had transferred to Raceland from Russell, hit a winning shot or some sort of big shot towards the end. Two district tiles in a tough district at a school as small as Raceland is pretty impressive.

He also seemed always to Coach well in the All "A" Tournaments. Anyone know how many All "A" District/Regional Titles he won?

My post above only included the last 10 years. I didn't have access to the won/loss records beyond the 97/98 season.

Coach Johnson got the most from his players all the time. His memorial game with Elliott County has always been a class event and meaningful for the Elliott County players and fans as well as the Rams.

In 93-94 Coach Johnson won the district title vs. Russell. The Rams were 23-9 that season . We had alot of players step up huge but Charlie Pack now a coach at Leslie Co. hit a huge 3 in the 4th to spark the big run. The Rams won going away by 12. Coach Johnson also won the All A in 94, 97, and 01. At All A state his record was 2-3. He was an assistant on the All A Region Championship in 1991.

Thank you! I knew someone would remember! :thumb:

Is it a KHSAA rule that all coaches and assistants be "Certified" employees instead of "Classified" employees??

I don't think that it's that way in the private schools, but I may be wrong

Bylaw 27 states the criteria of a Level 1 Coach as "a certified teacher and member of the regular school system faculty, employed a minimum of 3 regular periods for teaching classes, including physical education; for supervison of study halls; and/or exercising responsibilities in other activity assignments within the school schedule."

If Trimble doesnt want it, then I think the job should be offered to Floyd first. The boys all respect him and he knows his basketball.
