Great Recruiter or Great Coach?

Featured Replies

We have all heard the argument he's a great recruiter but he can't coach.

We have also heard he's a great coach but can't recruit.

Which would you rather have?

A great recruiter but just an okay coach that will always give you a team loaded with talent that always has the potential to win it all, but also runs the risk of a first round exit?

Or a well coached team with solid players that will consistently win you 20-25 but that you don't believe could ever win it all?

I would rather have a great recruiter, I think players, at least today, can overcome a coaching deficiency at times.

I would rather have a great recruiter who surrounds himself with great coaches. Formula for wins!

It's the Jimmy's and Joe's, not the X's and O's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil Jackson can vouch for that theory. ;)

Both.. If I had to choose one I'd rather have a great coach.

I want a great Manager surrounded by good assistants that can coach and recruit. It took a great manager to manage all of the talent on that 96 championship team, and Rick Pitino showed what a great manager does. You can get the top 5 recruits in the nation next year, and if they can't be managed you end up with 5 great recruits, no team chemistry, and chaos. That's not going to win either.

Those two options sum it up for me...I'll take the recruiter. To me, a season in which you have a realistic chance to win it all, yet lost in the second round, would be more exciting than a season in which you knew all along that you had no chance at winning the big dance, but made a nice run to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8. And, without talent, you can't win the big dance.

Can I have both?:ylsuper:

With your avatar, you got a great coach but no recruiter
