Donovan on "PTI"

Featured Replies

And why is that?

He bailed on a team that won the National Championship with all the players being his recruits in 1997 at Kentucky.

That's not just "asinine".....that's just "Pitino"!

The 1998 team was not a potential top 5 team as while they were obviously VERY good, they didn't have the same level of pure talent that the 1996 title and 1997 runnerup team had.

My thoughts on the whole thing are that I hope the new coach is Donovan. But we will know when we know and everything else is pure speculation at this point.

BTW, nothing would surprise me from Pitino. I think he is a GREAT coach, his resume speaks for itself, but I would go broke trying to predict what he is going to do.

Don't Tubby supporters all the time claim that Pitino couldn't have won the '98 title with those players?

I know that this Tubby support has never said that Rick couldn't have won a title with the 1998 team, but he didn't stick around to find out. Tubby did, whether those who dislike him want to hear it, it is the truth. Whether he would have or not is pure speculation. Either way, the banner is hanging in Rupp Arena and that is good enough for this UK fan!

Right On-- Tubby's winning had a lot more to do with his coaching than it being "Pitino's Team"-- Defer the credit any way you want to, but Tubby guided those cats to a national title.

You don't think the big money from Florida's #1 school...wouldn't pony up to outbid an SEC school? Please.

Not if it means placing basketball ahead of football on the scale...if you think they will put a higher priority on any sport ahead of football...please...

A stellar football or baseball season by UK standards is .500.

At Florida nothing less than a national championship is acceptable.

You've got to be kidding if you think UF doesn't have alums that would gladly donate money as well to a coach who just won back to back national titles for their alma mater.

Florida is the place to be right now. Either hop on the wagon or keep living in the past. The truth hurts my friend but UK's dominant run is over.

It's obvious you've jumped on the bandwagon...

And the truth will do nothing more than set you free...the truth is as follows: UK basketball is the preeminent job in college basketball and one of the top jobs in all of sports...PERIOD. As soon as you realize this and the fact that Florida is football FIRST and everything else comes somewhere after that, you'll feel much better...:D

I think Florida wants to be the King in both sports, and they are not doing a bad job of it either. I think they have the money and will spend it, fi Billy wants to stay.;)

Once again, Pitino is not going to bail on what figures to be a top-five team next year. That's just asinine.

First off I agree that he will not be coming to UK, but if you think he would not bail on a top 5 team for more money you have lost your mind. He left a national championship team at UK to go to the Celtics and more $$$.

Stud's only comeback on this is "Stop Living in the Past"

I heard that Pitinos' attorney said Tom Creen from Marquette would be the guy for the cats.

If they hire another coach that wants to play a half court game Barnhart will be run out of the state. Pitino probably does want Creen because that would keep Pitino's status in UK history secure. He has a much larger ego than the UK fans.

No, he didn't. That '97-98 team, while talented, was nowhere close to what was in Lexington the prior two seasons. Nobody expected that 98 team to do what it did.

He left — a departure that coincided with the departure of a national championship-caliber team — UK to go to the Celtics and more $$$.

I fixed your final sentence to reflect what the reality of the situation was.

Shirley you're not insinuating that Tubby actually coached his team "up"? All along I thought he "won with someone else's players."

According to the posts on here, you are wrong on the bolded, Jim. According to many of the posters on here, you or I or an untrained monkey could have led UK to the title that year. It sure wasn't anything Tubby did that year.:sssh: ;)

From my perspective, Tubby did a heckuva job coaching that season.

Everyone keep this in mind while watching any Rick Pitino/Billy Donovan interview. I find it strange that many people do not remember that just ten years ago, Rick Pitino could not ever tell the truth. He still can't. I have been made aware that Rick Pitino will be UK's next coach. It all makes sense when you really think about it. Ricky P. is Billy the Kid's mentor......Billy would not make a major decision like this without consulting with Rick. Billy would not take the UK job because Rick wants the UK job. Rick is now helping Billy get Florida and Jeremy Foley to ante up......all the while lying through his teeth.......again!

Pitino is not thrilled about living in Lexington, but he will be UK's next basketball coach. I have been told that one Rex Chapman is in the mix as well. He wants to be a head coach and learn it through Pitino kind of like Reggie Theus did.

The timing for the announcement (the real word, not Rick's word) I have told will be late this week. I would speculate it will be early next week after the Final Four, but that is just me trying to think of the best time for all parties involved to get the money right. If Florida wins it again, it might cost the Gator athletic department up to four million a year for Billy Donovan.
