The state tournament had a lot of records that were not correct. Billy Hicks should have been listed in the list of coaches that had won the most Sweet 16 games. He had won 14 before this year. Scott Co should have been listed in the list of most consecutive Sweet 16 wins with 7 in 98 and 99. Clay Co should have been listed with 7 in 88 and 89 I think.

 

The KHSAA also presented Hicks with an award for winning his 500th game during this season. He won his 500th game in the Sweet 16 in 2000. He has almost 700 now. Someone needs to take a good look at their records at KHSAA.

 

It's not as though they have a research department. They pretty much have to go on what information is submitted by the schools.

Congratulations to Scott County!!!!!! Unbelievable run going undefeated in KY and winning the State Championship.

 

Mackey's second half was fantastic showing his strong will to win. He reminds me alot of Derek Anderson.

 

It is a shame that the UK has not shown these talented players more respect by recruiting them more enthusiastically.

 

Maybe Billy Hicks should throw his name in the hat to replace Tubby. He is probably the best High School Coach in KY.

Truth in comparison:

1st Round

District - Henry Clay #20 in KY... State - Oldham Co. advantage - district

2nd Round

District - Bryan Station #3 in KY... State - Adair Co. advantage - district

 

Region - Frankfort (this game was kind of like having a bye.)

 

3rd Round

Region - Lexington Catholic #6 in KY... State Holmes. advantage - none (IMO Holmes was as good if not better than LC

Championship Round

Region - Tates Creek #11 in KY... State - Ballard #2 in KY. advantage - state

 

Overall - the district/regional tournament was the tougher of the two IMO

Congrats to the Scott County Cardinals on the win yesterday. I bought tickets for the game in the middle of the Scott Co. section, so it turned me into a SC fan for a night. Great crowd for the game, and I was impressed with Mackey's performance after a lackluster 1st half. Ballard's defense was swarming all night, and I was impressed with the overall effort both teams gave. It was an entertaining ballgame.

Some thoughts:

 

1) Congrats to Scott County for an unbelievable season! You deserved to win the state title and you all should enjoy every moment.

2) Bud Mackey was huge in the finals despite playing through early foul trouble. I now can see why Indiana wanted him so bad. He provides heady skills, with athleticism, he can play "D" and score at will. He'll have a great senior year.

3) Both teams played extremely hard and I really appreciated that. There is nothing like seeing two tough teams battling out for 32 minutes for a state crown.

4) Congrats to Billy Hicks and Scott Hundley for winning their 2nd state championship. They both deserve it!

5) Twany Beckham only had 2 points. This was huge for Scott County. If he would have had his normal 16-18 points, Ballard probably would have won.

6) Matt Walls is an absolute warrior despite having a horrid shooting night(4-20). I believe that he is better than Brandon Stockton and Josh Carrier. He'll either win Mr. Basketball or be Runner-Up.

7) Lastly, I had a blast this week. It's always one of my favorite weeks of the year. I really, really enjoy the pre-game ceremony on Saturday night before the game. When they play "My Old Kentucky Home," I literally get goosebumps.

8) My first cousin and former assistant coach said it best on Saturday morning, "I wish the State Tournament lasted 7 days....."

4) It was Scott Hundley's first state championship. He was runner-up and final four as a player.

5) Jimmy Warren deserves most of the credit for Beckham being held to 2 points. Warren was the reason SC was almost impossible to beat after he earned his way into the starting lineup. Warren locked up the other team's best guard.

Good point about Warren. Having a shut-down defender is key for a state tourney run. Great example of this was Warren Gross for South Laurel in '05, who was a big-time disruptor and an unsung hero on that team.

I saw that in the state tournament program - does anyone know who "Brewers" is?

 

I think the school was in Marshall County. Brewers lost to Maysville High in the 1947 final, then won it all in 1948. Led by 1948 Mr. Basketball Coy Creason.
