Just got back from Lexington and man did Hill put on a clinic despite sitting out much of the game b/c of foul trouble.

 

My assessment of the game:

 

PT came out clicking on all cylinders with an early 9-3 run. Holmes then managed to creep back in the game, goin on a 9-2 run of their own to close out the first quarter including a 35 footer by Hill at the buzzer.

 

Some sloppy play in the 2nd qtr allowed PT to get back in the game and cut the lead to 3 on a ticky tack foul right before halftime.

 

Momentum changer: Jefferson to Rice alley oop that would start the 2nd half and Holmes cruised from there holding a 5-11 point lead the rest of the way. Jeferson was quiet but very effective tonight distributing the ball. Holmes bench really came up HUGE on the defensive side when Rice and Hill both had to sit because of foul trouble.

 

Iron man of the game: Arrez Henderson. Played all 36 minutes and quietly had 12 points I believe.

 

I was very impressed with the Mcclure kid of Pt. He definetly gave Rice a wake up call tonight. IMO MCclure is the best player PT has. Perry was virtually non existent as well as Jones. I believe the guards had more combined points than those 2. PT is very scrapp and stayed in the game with their offensive rebounding.

 

All in all, great game by both teams, but Holmes was just too much.

Holmes' physical defense won the game. They kept Tilghman out of the low post and made them take some tough shots. The Tornado missed their first 15 shots of the second half ... miraculously, they trailed by only 10 at the end of the third quarter and got it down to six with five minutes left.

 

 

When Holmes plays that hard on the defensive end, they're a tough out for anyone.

That was probably the worst game Ive seen Tilghman play all year. Why Steig didn't try to put more dpressure on Hill in the perimeter is beyond me. Hill hit at least 3 3-pointers wide open. Holmes played the better ball game, Tilghman didn't deserve to win this game and have no one to blame but themselves.

Listened to this game on Hazard radio and these guys said it was the worst game they have seen all year. Alot of turnovers and alot of easy missed shots. Said they could not believe these two teams won their regions.

My guess is probably because the scouting report on Hill is, "make him shoot before he drives on you". Hill is more known for his "dribble-drive" and will pull up around 5-10 ft and kill teams. As a coach my goal would be to deny him the ball for the most part, but when he gets it keep him as far away from the basket as possible.

 

I thought it was intereting to see PT double team Hill towards the end, but he was still taking it to the hole.

 

Does anyone have a complete stat sheet for this game that they could give us a link too? or post? I'd love to see some stats.

 

Duran, who still hasn't committed a foul in his HS career, might of had more turnovers than he had assist. And what was he thinking at the end of the half? Dumb foul!

I thought DJ played pretty well... some of the passes he threw left me scratching my head as to how he got them there... and I'll give props to the little guard from PT cause he was all over DJ... and there was a great steal once coming from the weak side when he turned his back...

 

Rice needs to really not try to pick up 2 fouls within the first minute of the game...

 

If SL plans on putting that big freshman on Rice, they will be sorry... I was not impressed in the least bit with that kid(St. John maybe?)...

 

If Holmes gets out and runs like they should they should beat SL... if SL slows it down there could be problems because they are bigger and longer...

Somebody needs to ask the Hazard Radio guys if Holmes was so bad how come Holmes (without Jefferson) went to Hazard and handed Hazard a butt whooping on their home court by 17pts. earlier this year?

I think we all can agree that Holmes will have to play a better all-around TEAM game to win on Friday vs. South Laurel.

 

And yes, SL will slow it down. But for how long is the key.

I'd have to agree. I thought that both teams played pathetic. Holmes was just begging to squander their lead that I'm surprised that they pulled it out. A more controlled team than PT would have sent the Bulldogs home early. I'm thrilled that Holmes has advanced (Only 1 of 2 teams to get out of the 1st round for the 9th Region since 1998) but they'll be outsmarted by SL if they continue to make bad fundamental choices with the ball and force up crazy (Rice) shots. Greg was taken to school on numerous occasions and I hope that he learned something. Thank God that Hill had a great game, he was truly the difference in the game. Aside from letting Austin shoot all night I thought that PT clobbered the Bulldogs with 'D' close to the basket. They rarely got off an uncontested shot. I don't know that Holmes has seen this kind of intensity all year. I think it showed them that they'll have to step up even more as they move on. I hope that the Bulldogs got the first round jitters out of their system and that they can keep growing throughout the tournament. They need to realize that every possession counts and to quit wasting opportunities by trying to play a game of 'showtime' all the time. Yes, Rice can take it to his grave that he dunked it at Rupp, but 'so what' if he keeps forcing up bad shots and the team ultimately suffers because of. I hate to keep singleing out one player but I think that it's key that Rice add 'passing the ball' to his arsenal of moves. It will only help the bigger cause of the TEAM. I don't mean to be harsh because I really do want to see Holmes succeed, but I thought that that was one of the ugliest games I've ever seen. Critical or not, I'm still behind them all the way....GO DAWGS!!! Make the 9th Region proud!!! :ylsuper:

I listened to part of the game. Sounded like Holmes maintained their 5 pt lead most of 2nd half. Hill was the leader and gets my Player of the game award.

 

SL will come out and probably try to trap the Dawgs into turnovers. Last year I know they ran a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap that was lethal. They had the 6'9 kid at hte point, Profitt 6'4 at the wing and another long kid at the other wing. Hammonds was in the middle taking up space. Holmes will have to get it out and run and not let them set up that trap. If they do, DJ will need to take care of the ball out front. I cant imagine SL comes out and plays man-man against the speedy Dawgs.

For everyone saying this was a sloppy game, you need to realize it's because BOTH teams played outstanding defense. Holms hasn't seen defensive pressure like that all year but still managed to get the W.

 

So before you guys get too critical, why not give teams a little respect and congratulate them rather than focusing on the negatives.
