March 13, 200719 yr I watch football get a new football system this year to include 6 different classes! But in a basketball state I am amazed that we have created a class A tournament that has been allowed private schools to dominate. Was that what they wanted to happen. You would think providing a Class A tournament in basketball would be to help the small schools, it did, but only the private ones!!! I also watch the regular season and postseason, regional tournaments and only the top schools, which our 6A football schools are winning the 2nd region basketball tournaments, or runner up. Why does football expand to 6 classes, and yet you only have 2 classes of state tournaments and allow the private schools to dominate the Class A tournament. To 95% of KHSAA schools they have zero chance of getting to a state tournament, but every state that borders us allows for every size school a chance. Maybe the KHSAA should wake up, or stop being payed!!!
March 13, 200719 yr Dont get on to Meagi because the facts are wrong. The only thing wrong is the way the KHSAA handles the basketball programs across the state. I will leave it at that before this turns into a 5 thread topic again.

Just to point out if ANY HIGH SCHOOL in the state felt strong enough about the class system for other sports, they could make a proposal to the delegate assembly for consideration. If the OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS in the state agreed, they would vote in the positive for the proposal and we would have a class system. Changes in the KHSAA come from the schools not from the people in the KHSAA HQ's. The KHSAA organization and setup is determined by the HIGH SCHOOLS.

March 13, 200719 yr Basketball will never change in KY. As someone said it is the high and mighty $$$$! We are the only state in the country that still plays a true Sweet 16 State Championship. As for the private schools winning the A, maybe the public schools need to work harder to catch up to the private's. Don't jump all over me, I work w/the public schools.
March 13, 200719 yr Since we are the only state in the counrty with one state title it makes kentuckys state tourny one of the best in the country... The state champion can really say that they are the best in the state... In football the state champion can not really say that because there are 6 state champs... Anything can happen in basketball and small schools can have there chance to win a state title... If Kentucky ever went to a class system for basketball it would be the worst decision by KHSAA ever
March 13, 200719 yr Publci Schools have won 12 of the Girls All-A Classics to 5 privates. Hardly the domination implied by the start of the thread, and not a 'fact' to be disregarded.
March 13, 200719 yr You are right Derby City but I would be that the number of Class A public schools far exceeds the number of private that participate. I am not sure how I feel about the structure of the State Tournament but I do agree that private schools have a definite advantage. I see it all the time locally. it also has to do with how rural your schools are. For example there is no YMCA or extra gyms for the kids to practice at or have a league outside of the season, so they do not get the advantage of playing all year. It does come down to money but more to do with the opportunities available to the kids, like camps leagues etc.

If Kentucky ever went to a class system for basketball it would be the worst decision by KHSAA ever I cannot disagree more. #1 Having "one true champion" does absolutely NOTHING for the development of the game or the popularity of the championships. It is SOLELY a "feel good" situation for those who consistently have the best opportunities to play in the state tournament. #2 There is NO proof that there would be less interest in the tournament. Quite frankly, more schools with more of an opportunity SHOULD lead to more attendance. #3 Check again. Small schools (real small independent especially public ones)have a miniscule chance of winning the state tournament, or, in most cases, even getting to it. #4 Doing something just because "that's the way it has always been" is without a doubt the WORST reason for continuing to do it that way. #5 No, no member of the KHSAA (member schools) has made a proposal to change, and that is a shame.
March 13, 200719 yr You could still possibly play a Sweet 16 format w/a class system and still make your $$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It could be done, it really could!!! It would take a complete rehaul, but it could be beneficial to the state's basketball in the long run
March 13, 200719 yr The proposal to change to different classes can come from any size school but I can bet you every last penny that the majority of schools would be against it because the majority of the schools are large schools, not small schools. The large schools have NOTHING to lose by keeping it the way it is. If they changed it, they would have to compete only against large schools in the district and regional and have less chance of getting to the state tournament. Large schools always (especially with small schools in their district and regional) have a chance of playing small schools to further their advancement in the tournament, but if they only played large schools they would have less of a chance. It's a moot point because it will NEVER change.
March 13, 200719 yr First and foremost the "All-A" Classic is not a state tournament, it is a statewide tournament. It is not run by the KHSAA although I have seen many teams that win it declare themselves state champions and even go so far as to get rings. Second as I recall the "All-A" classic was the creation of private schools in Northern Kentucky. Are the public schools now going to try to take this over?

As to #3, Paintsville has won a state title in basketball. Trinity hasn't.
