D'antoni leaving Phoenix for UK?

Featured Replies

I am going to save this thread just in case so some odd reason this happens. And we will look back in a few years and I will say I told you so. We still won't have any final fours or Championships becuase his teams play ZERO defense and in college that just won't cut it.

So are you saying D'antoni would be a step back, or just a lateral move?

I think if you couple D'antoni's offensive mind, with a defensive minded assistant who can get the team to play SOME D, it makes a difference.

Who is to say he wouldnt adopt some defensive philosophy in the college game, knowing it is necessary. With some of the D that is played in the NBA, maybe he has the mindset that it is not necessary to teach it, and also is of the mindset he has the athletes in Marion, Amare, and Bell to guard some of the other teams good players.

Honestly he would NOT be the first choice of mine to come here. I mean just look how well his teams have done when he doesn't have the best pg in the world playing. I mean they have talent on the team, but take away that pg in Nash and they dont do so well...I personally would rather have Crean, Donovan, Few, Ford, or Pelphrey before him....

No way do you take Ford or Pelphrey over a proven NBA coach. They have done basically nothing. Few is a stretch as well.

NBA and college basketball are TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. Just as Pitino about that! I am just not very high on him as a coach and yes I very easily would take Ford or Pelphrey over him...

The day they take Ford is the day I switch my allegiance to another school.

So we lose a guy big deal, I sure we also will gain some more...:D

I'm sure the gain will be larger than the loss.

D'Antoni has been great at the highest level. What have Ford and Pelphrey done? Ford did do some good at EKU, but that is a mid major. Pelphrey has been less than stellar at USA. He was a good assistant at UF and all of these people are still riding on that thinking he will be a good head coach at the level of UK. Come on now.

Many college coaches struggle to coach in the NBA. Guys who are bad in the NBA come back to college and do well. Why wouldnt a guy who has succeeded do well?

I think UK would be in a great situation if they got Mike D'Antoni... I also think that he would adjust his system to fit the college game... He's no fool and understands the talent difference.

Kids dreaming of playing in the NBA would line up to play for a college coach who runs the most exciting team to watch in the league... Fact.

What has he done besides win a few regular season games.

He has succeed with the MVP in the league every year running the show..How well has his Suns team ever did without Nash? Not that good, and they have talent on that team, so there is not reason to do as bad as they do without Nash? How well did he did in the other place he coached at in the NBA? If I remember correctly not so well. As GT pointed out, he would have to have a great point guard running the show if he is going to do well, and well if he doesn't get that perfect pg in recruiting then we are going to struggle. Also do we know how well he will be able to teach college kids discipline, and how to shoot a basketball. He gets guys now who are in the NBA for a reason because they know how to score a basketball. Guys in college dont make every single wide open shot like the do in the NBA. In guys like Ford or Pelphrey you got guys who have experience coaching at the college level now, and well with Ford especially its probably easy to expect he be good at helping teach kids how to shoot better. Plus those guys would both run a fast pace style that we all want to see, but wouldn't be centered around having to have that PERFECT pg to run the system dantoni uses. So yeah I would take those guys over him, especially Ford. But they wouldn't be my top choices, people like Crean, and Donovan are ahead of them....

As a side note I wouldn't be totally against having him, but he just wouldn't be one of my top choices...

What has he done besides win a few regular season games.

Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, Gregg Popovich, and Pat Riley are the only guys to win titles in years... He's on the second tier right below these guys...

And he always will be. Teams like that aren't built to win titles.

I'm not certain on your argument... IF D'Antoni came to UK, and IF he had years of great regular seasons and subpar tournament performances, that would be a downgrade from now in what way?

How is that an upgrade. People are made we haven't made final fours. Doesn't matter how you start its how you finish.

As convinced as you are that he is not an upgrade, I'm as convinced that it would be better under him and in that regard I'm not worried.

I don't think he's coming anyways though, so it' sa moot point.

Obviously neither of us are going to budge, because neither of our arguments have merit. The guy has done nothing in the NCAA for us to be able to judge him on.
