Is it time for Kentucky to revisit restrictions on June Football?

At a great school, the AD would step in and make sure schedules do not conflict between the two…

OR, like at a great school I’m intimately familiar with (DeSales) the AD doesn’t have to step in because what both the basketball AND football coaches prioritize is doing whatever is necessary to allow these KIDS (not professional or college athletes) to be multi-sport athletes.
Coach Ferch (basketball) and I work together starting immediately after basketball season ends to make sure our two-sport guys don’t have to choose one over the other in June. And that includes making sure there is plenty of recovery time after they do football work ONLY in the mornings and summer bball work ONLY in the late afternoon/evenings.
It’s really not that difficult…unless you’re a coach who WANTS his guys to have to choose one over the other (I won’t mention any programs, but I’ve heard this happens—sadly so for talented kids).

Why is football restricted by the month at all?

The whole by law thing appears to be piece mealed together.  They went through a changed a part here and there over time but I don’t think they every truly looked at how one change affects parts of the by law. To me that’s why it feels like we have so much contradictions and confusion.

There are other parts that logistically don’t work. An example is attendance. I understand why they say you can’t take it and at the same time if some thing happens and a coach gets asked if Johnny was with him there isn’t any record. Coaches a responsible for supervision by their districts. Saying “I don’t know if he was there” isn’t an answer a district is going to want to hear.

I don’t even feel the term “organized” is ever clearly defined. If you can lift, run and work on skills how can any of that happen without organization? If they point to the USA Football levels of contact then it appears you can do Level 0 which is plays on air. Any one that pulls guards in their offense has had both guards pull and run into each other like the Keystone Cops. A QB and RB run into each other during an exchange. A WR go up to make some type of catch and come down and hit his head.

Agreed. Also I haven’t looked but are other falls sports also not allowed to have “organized” practice in June? If it’s this way for football. Then say Boys soccer I assume can’t do really any real practices or scrimmages against each other can they? Is Cross County not allowed to go practice? Golf? I could be wrong, but I believe all these other fall sports are allowed essentially do normal practices without mandatory attendance. So doesn’t seem right why they limit football though.

As a multi time state champion, Guys like Coach Haddix need to be front & center in voicing their frustrations.

It really is crazy what the KHSAA allows basketball to do in June with the limitations they place on football.

Basketball can go on out of state, play games every single day, do camps on college campuses 5 months before they play.

Football? You can lift weights & run everyday lol.

This is why Kentucky high school football is terrible compared to other states. At one time we passed Tennessee High School football. Now they are better.

It’s not like UK and UL basketball are beating down Kentucky High Schools to find basketball recruits. These kids play WAY WAY too many games and not enough practice. Our skills are terrible in basketball and travel teams are a cause of it. If someone says “that’s the only way to get recruited” they are clueless because UK and UL ain’t offering their kids. Maybe 2 guys from Kentucky from each school.

I think there's a legitimate conversation to be had about whether football's summer restrictions should be updated, but I'm not convinced basketball is the problem.

Basketball allows more games because skill development comes from repetitions in live competition. Football is a collision sport, so the KHSAA has to balance player development with safety concerns. Those aren't identical situations.

As for recruiting, very few Kentucky athletes in any sport are being recruited by UK or Louisville. Most college opportunities come from smaller Division I programs, Division II, NAIA, and Division III schools. Summer camps and travel ball can help those athletes get exposure they might not otherwise receive.

If Kentucky football is falling behind neighboring states, it's worth studying what they're doing differently. But simply saying "let football do what basketball does" ignores the fundamental differences between the sports. The goal should be finding the right balance between development, safety, and giving kids the best opportunity to improve.

I’m looking at it from both sports. Yes Kentucky High School Football was ahead of the curve. Now it’s not. We have to look and see why every other neighboring state are leading the way.

Yes our once proud “basketball” state is not as good as traditional old football states like Texas and Alabama. Just naming a few.

Even Geno, one of the best college basketball coaches, has said we play too many games in America and if we don’t get back to practicing, then we are going to be behind European countries. If you look at the Dream Team blowing out everyone to even early 2000s where our NBA stars lost to Lithouiania and Spain. To even now where we need Steph Curry to sink a game winning shot.
We are losing our skill set. Just like soccer our soccer in the US is terrible compared to Europe.
