Who wins the 14th region championship?  Does Hazard finally breakthrough and finally win it all after falling short the past several years as the favorite? Does Powell County win the region for the first time since 2003?

 

These two played in mid-February in Hazard and it was a close game throughout with Hazard finally winning 75-70. The Bulldogs’ Seth Caudill scored 34. 
I think on the neutral court at Breathitt Coliseum that the Pirates could win the championship in another close game. But they will need all hands on deck to do it. In the loss during the season to the Bulldogs they got a  a poor shooting performance from their PG Conner Morguson, who was 0-8. He’s a threat from deep and very talented at setting his teammates up for points. If he’s in the form he’s capable of and the Pirates shots are falling they are in good shape. 
But the same can be said about Hazard as well.  Seth Caudill and Trace Kincaid can light up the scoreboard. And their center Tucker Johnson is strong and physical on the interior. Powell’s defense is really going to have to hustle like crazy, particular finding a way to slow down Caudill. If he gets in the 30’s again on them then they may be in trouble. 
This should be a very interesting 14th regional championship game.

I’ve been on the Pirates all season long, but I think Hazard is the more complete team.  They need to feature Edwards some more. They sometimes can get lost in only high ballscreens for Morguson.  Coach Huff can finish writing quite the redemption story.  I feel like Caudill will find a way to get it done.

Give me the Bulldogs in a close one.

 

These two have met nine times in the 14th Region tournament, with Hazard winning seven. Powell's two wins came in the first round in 2002 and way back in 1943. They've met once in the region final, an 87-64 Hazard win in 1955. That Hazard club would go on to win the state championship.

We tied at 11-11 after 1.

Hazard leads 31-27 at the half.

Powell had the most talent they have had in years but just couldn't pull it together for a win.

Powell didn’t shoot the ball well and Hazard did is the short answer here. Powell’s sophomore PG Conner Morguson, a very good guard, had an off night shooting and the Pirates seemed out of sync much of the game. They did pull within 4 late in the game but Hazard held on. The Bulldog’s Trace Kincaid lit up the scoreboard with 3’s, particularly in the first half. He also did a great job defensively. When Kincaid and Seth Caudill both are playing well Hazard is very good.
