With Duke it is because of the joke of it all. 

So we are talking about Tulane, North Texas, James Madison, Memphis, South Florida, Little Sisters of the Poor, and who knows who but then there are all these teams:

Notre Dame: Ranked 9th, the Fighting Irish are on the outside looking in but still have a chance to make the 12-team field.
Alabama: Ranked 10th, the Crimson Tide have a similar situation to Notre Dame, needing to win their conference to have a guaranteed spot.
Ole Miss: Ranked 7th, the Rebels are just outside the playoffs but have a chance to get in if they win their conference.
Oregon: Ranked 6th, the Ducks are right on the bubble and could be in if they win their conference or if teams ahead of them falter.
Miami: Ranked 12th, the Hurricanes are on the outside looking in, but their two-loss record may allow them an at-large bid to the 12-team field. 
Oklahoma: The Sooners had a strong resume and were considered a lock for the playoff, but their final ranking and seed were still in question.
Texas: The Longhorns had a good record but were considered an underdog for a playoff spot due to having three losses.
Vanderbilt: The Commodores were considered an underdog for a playoff spot due to having a weak schedule and limited wins against ranked opponents. 

Alabama is probably safe after beating Auburn. Beating Georgia definitely gets them in. I don’t look for Vanderbilt to make it I wouldn’t sleep on Ole Miss, they could get in, who knows. Texas has a strong argument for an at large, even with their three losses in my opinion. 
 

I almost can’t imagine the ACC bringing two teams again after last year’s playoff, but I do believe Miami is clearly better than Virginia and Duke, which the selection committee might believe and give them the nod. 
 

Oregon could be in for the B1G. And as far as the teams outside of the power conferences, I can’t see more than one getting in, deserving or not.  They should have just included 16 teams when the playoff was expanded. Even with that, others would probably complain too. But 16 is better than 12 in my opinion.

There’s going to be clusters in people’s minds already. If BYU beats Texas Tech on Saturday, that’s really going to add more. I don’t think BYU will beat them but that brings more selection chaos. I would think all of the potential at large bids are big Texas Tech fans. 

I know Sark says it’ll be a travesty to be left out, but he can’t really mean that. They lost to 3-8 Florida and have 3 losses themselves.

I agree needs to be 16.

Hiw did Miami Redhawks make to the MAC championship?  Toledo was better than them.
