Since 2021, Beechwood has played three teams in the third round that came in running the ball 64% of the time or more:

2024 - Martin Co. 77% - Beechwood wins 44-7

2023 - Martin Co. 85% - Beechwood wins 55-0

2022 - Shelby Valley 49% - Beechwood win 49-12 - outlier here is SV had super QB Russ Osborne that season who threw for 2787 yards and 27 TD's. He didn't play in that game and they - with a freshman QB only completed 5 of 12 pass attempts.

2021 - Walton Verona 82% - Beechwood wins 50-6

This year, Prestonsburg is HEAVY on the ground at 75%. Granted, their horse - Kain Patton - is one of the best backs in the state. Could he explode against Beechwood's defense that really hasn't seen a back of this level since Gaiser in week 5? Sure, but I don't see it happening. Beechwood's defense is playing its best football of the season and the pass rush has been fierce the past few weeks.

In my eyes, this is more than likely another version of the four games above from 21-24 for the simple reason that you BETTER be able to throw the ball against Beechwood if you want to pull the upset. None of those teams could throw the ball effectively or stop Beechwood's pass rush.

Obviously, Prestonsburg has made much more of an attempt this year to develop their passing game, and Alex Johnson is CLEARLY an outstanding athlete and difference maker. But it's clear that they don't have an aerial game that doesn't involve much more than throwing to Patton. Look, Kain Patton is a monster - no doubt - but he's got 34 of the team's 76 pass receptions. Beechwood, over the years, has been supremely effective at taking out the opposing team's #1 target/weapon. So, if Beechwood is successful in neutralizing Patton and the pass rush continues to shine...who else on the P-Burg roster takes control and makes plays?

I just think this is a brutal matchup for P-Burg and see Beechwood winning something along the lines of 49-7.

  • Prestonburg is a very good team and would beat the majority of teams in 2A. However, the top 4 teams of Beechwood, Mayfield, LCA, and Belfry are just a whole different level than everyone else. Beechw

  • Best case scenario for Prestonsburg is moving the chains and finishing a few drives, which I could see them doing. Realistically, I can't see the Blackcats keeping pace with Beechwood's offense. The T

Pick your poison. Pabst, Aylor and Fryman average as a group more than 10 yards a carry. They may not run as often as other teams but they have speed to burn with those three. All three are a threat t

Guys as an antique I have no knowledge or experience with turf in the rain.  Do turf shoes give any semblance of traction on a saturated field?

Why do I keep thinking all this rain talk will be a big nothing?

I agree but I am glad I will be "watching" from home.

Bigger issue will be the ball handling, especially gun snaps. Be interested to see if either team changes to under center and effect of heavy wet ball situations.

Updated weather as of 5:50 Friday morning.  Rain, rain and more rain starting noonish.

This is a great subject to bring up. I've heard too many people to count say "you can't just go under center, because it will mess up the timing of the offense". Is that a load or what?

I agree Beechwood has been pass first this year. But to answer the question about what they are capable of, against Covington Catholic, Pabst and Fryman averaged over nine yards of carry on thirteen carries. Aylor did not play in that game.

Beechwood worked on the running game against Campbell County in the last regular season game. Aylor, Pabst and Fryman had 21 carries for 175 yards against Campbell County.

Can't argue against that I think Beechwood has some of the most explosive playmakers in the state but they gotta get them out in open space can't rely running between the tackles

In looking a little bit into Wes Hager and his background, I had NO idea he's only 27 or 28 (anyone know his actual age?) and wrote a book available on Amazon about last season called "Silent Whistles". Fascinating....

I will probably be in the stands.  Should be able to send a few updates as the night goes.

Yep, pretty much for the entire state of Kentucky.
