Since the similar football thread on this topic has been very popular, what has been heard as to the new basketball coach at Harlan County High (to open in 2008)? The conventional wisdom around the area has long been Mike Jones (former Cawood, Jackson Co., Harlan, Clay Co. coach) will take over. He is a current administrator at Cawood.

 

Just curious if anyone has knowledge of the future coach or, if not, ideas on who it might or should be.

Mike Jones would be a great coach for Harlan County High but i don't know if he will be around for that long. I have heard next year will be his last. If i am correct he will be 56 and have in 33 years before the school opens.

I vote for Mike Jones for basketball or the new principal, either way would be great for the new school.

Mike Jones as the coach of Cawood? Isn't he a rapper? I think I saw a commercial about him on TV.

I would go all out for Coach Hicks and try to bring him back home to finish out his career. Would make this large school a instant powerhouse in the region. He would be able to get all of Harlan Co. together better than Jones IMO.

Billy is the best in the state and I would love to see him get back to his roots and go out with a bang.

I have heard Hicks say he would like to build one more program before he retires. I have also heard his wife say she aint going back.

 

Guys, the fellow who makes the decision is Jones' brother in law. My guess is that if Jones wants it he will get it.

With no disrespect toward the new school in Harlan, Billy Hicks would be crazy to leave his current situation for that job. Lets face it, Scott County is in the position to have a shot at the regional crown virtually every year. Even though there would be less competition in the 13th, i think he would still have a lot more opportunities to win the 11th. But who knows, maybe he's getting bored with all the success he's had at Scott County.

Coach Hicks has left good situations before (Harlan to Corbin then to Scott Co.) and made each stop a much better place than the one before, why not one more time?

Things would certainly get interesting in Harlan County if that were to happen. Any other names being tossed around? I would think there would be plenty of interest in this opening.

I don't believe that Hicks will leave Scott Co. He gets some of the top talent in the state year in and year out. I think the job at Harlan would be a wonderul job to have, but it wouldn't make sense for him to leave.

 

I do think that Mike Jones would be a great fit. He is familiar with this area. He has had success at Harlan High School with Class A State Championships, deep runs into the Sweet 16, and a national ranking. I have also heard that Jones has never had a losing season, and he has been in this business a long time.

 

I would like to see Jones hired as the basketball coach.

I cant see Billy Hicks leaving Scott County. He has a powerhouse team each year. But anything is possible.
