Not sure if you can jump from Bath County to the next Mountain Powerhouse, but I've seen crazier things! Bath is 3-3 with wins over Piarist, Sayre, and Richmond Model. Hope you are not trying to throw a low jab to Jim Bob???

Not at all, I thought because he is from there, he would be the next pick, behind Billy of course. He seems to want to run his basketball program after his uncle, Which is a good thing if you have the talent pool Billy has.

Billy Hicks wins wherever he is, and so does Mike Jones.

 

There are a lot of good coaches with Harlan County connections. Jim Bob had some good teams at Greenup, but he'd be behind a few guys.

Most of you are talking about creating another job in a district that is already losing money and students and closing schools and laying off good teachers. Education should be a primary concern, coaching pay is a stipend. So are you saying lay off more good teachers in core classes and create another high paying job in a district that is losing money? I would think tax payers should be concerned, especially if there are already good people already there that have been faithful to the district.

Don't worry so much about the district. It is a District that has been heading in the right direction as far as Academics goes. Saylor, like him or not, has shown he is going to do what is best for the Kids of Harlan County no matter if its popular or not. Because of the decision to consolidate the OEA has had to rent rooms weekly ever since and have been very familiar with the County. Every state office that ever was has been in Harlan since this matter has been tackled. Somebody told me the only agency that hasn't investigated this system is the CIA and they were expecting them to show up. Seems the system is squeaky clean because not one thing has turned up. We will be fine.

We also need the very best to lead us as far as our sports programs goes and the people of Harlan deserve it.

I am kind of confused about your post. How is hiring a new coach creating a new postition? There are 3 current head coaches that will soon be one. It seems to me that that would be saving money to me. Also Mike Jones is already in the system so if he is the coach then how would that be creating or bring in someone? Sounds like to me that you are just not for the consolidation which is fine and your own opionion but the last time I checked they will have to have a someone to coach the basketball team.

Are you assuming all these other teachers from the current schools have teaching positions at Harlan County High already? You have faculty from three schools combining to make one...and that district is already losing students...which made the consolidation necessary in the first place. Unless the district is laying these people off, you must have a position to place someone in. Coaching is a stipend, people are hired into the system as a position, whether it be certified or classified. I think these things need to be considered when decisions like these are made. Stipends can be from $6,000 to $10,000 more or less at any district. Positions are salary, depending on experience, with the coaching stipend added onto salary. I think it is wrong to layoff a teacher, (basketball and football are level I according to KHSAA), and should be a teaching certificate...which makes the position most likely $60,000 or more. Read above again, the new school is beautiful, but other things should factor in as well. I think it is wrong to lay off good people in the district that love Harlan County and want to see it succeed, just to get a name that may or may not last.

Wouldn't all the teachers with tenure be rehired?

Apparently no one is guaranteed a job...but most likely tenured people will be rehired...of course that is only a guess from an outsider. Didn't the three high schools that are closing have to do staff reductions just this past year because of a decline of students? I am sure with a consolidated school, some students will choose to attend other places, which will likely lead to more staff reductions as well.
