Ky High School Football Blue Bloods?

Featured Replies

Kentucky has one of the country’s oldest histories in high school football and has many storied programs. In college football there is a lot of discussion about the blue blood programs, and what makes a program a blue blood. Got me thinking about what Ky high school programs are blue bloods….?

Locks: Trinity, Highlands, Male, St Xavier, Mayfield

Maybe: Bowling Green, Paducah Tilghman, Danville, Beechwood, Cov Cath, Boyle Co. Who else?

College Blue Bloods are ( I think) :

1 ND, 2 Michigan, 3 Bama, 4 OSU, 5 Texas, 6 Oklahoma, 7 Nebraska, 8 Florida, 9 Penn State?

Should there be 9 blue bloods 10? What’s more important? championships? Wins? Recent prominence? Am I way off?

I looked to see if this has been a topic and could not find anything. Interested in what people think about this, might be a fun discussion. I might be completely wrong about this? Or is this super obvious?

I think a blue blood is a team that could be terrible but your ecstatic you beat them because of the name on the jersey that represents years of success and championships.

Beechwood has the 3rd most championships in state history ... no way they are anything other than a blue blood.

  • It's OK to admit you aren't familiar with Belfry. To define Belfry's success as being more recent and comparing them to CAL is a tough putt. People forget Belfry reached the State Finals bef

I’m starting to think maybe Boyle Co is a lock program?

If Scott County didn’t have to play X and Trinity in the finals/semi finals for years they may be in this conversation lol.

Scott Co is probably the next team I didn’t mention. One of my favorite uniforms too.

I think as a Blue Blood as a program that has been successful over a decent period of time (ie. Kentucky basketball) and who beating, even when they are down, means more that most wins.

My tier-list is as follows:

Sure-fire Blue Bloods: Trinity, Highlands, Mayfield, Beechwood, St. Xavier, Male

Possible: Boyle County, Danville, Bowling Green, Pikeville, Covington Catholic

Next-up: Christian Academy (Lou.), Paducah Tilghman

I didn’t think of Pikeville. Is Belfry in the conversation of blue blood?

Forgot about Belfry to be honest. Would have them in that third-tier as they have had a lot of success but more recently. Similar to CAL

I think Belfry has to be in there.  Coach Haywood left a heck of a legacy.  You can move Danville and Boyle County into the locks.  If a program has double digit championships, they're a blueblood.  Corbin is a possibility. Ashland Blazer is in the all-time top 100 list for wins and has multiple state championships.  Somerset only has the single state championship since the playoffs started in 1959, but they have been playing since 1909 and are in the all-time top 100 for wins as well.  They also have a few "claimed" state championships from before schools were classed and playoffs held.

I feel like Danville is the Nebraska of the blue bloods. Borderline lock, but what have you done for me lately?

Is all time wins list better than state championships list? I honestly think those two stats are about even. The third category is the loosey goosey feel test?

If Mayfield is a lock then Danville has to be a lock.  I believe Danville has beaten Mayfield in the title game 5 times and a few other times in the semi's.  Plus they are 6-1 vs Mayfield in the last 25 years.

Danville did make back to back state championship appearances as recently as 2016-17, winning the championship in 2017.  I'm a Somerset fan, so I'm not much of a Danville fan, but they are a lock.

Yeah probably. Danville is a lock as well probably. What should be the number of blue bloods?

No more than 5-6 I'd say as true bluebloods. But also some schools are more modern bluebloods than others. I think every single one of beechwood's titles came after 1980 or something crazy.
