According to my calculations....Holy Cross should go from unranked to like 6/7 ASAP.

  • Very good win for Covington Holy Cross.

  • Best game that I have been to in a few years.  Stats will come later.

Brian Ferguson QB for HC makes guys miss. Elusive. D played great. BC threw a hail Mary pass on 3rd 37 for a fluke TD. HC played without Littelo 62, 320 linemen also. Great game by both teams, kicking game cost BC the game and HC kickng game won the game.

Can we throw the dirt on all of the pre season hype for the Polar Bears now?

Here is the stat summary for the game.

TurboStats GameCast for Football: Holy Cross Indians_vs_Bracken County Polar Bears

Well, I'm sorry if you weren't at Thomas More University for this one!  It was a great game between the highly ranked 2A Polar Bears and the 1A Indians.

For Bracken County, QB Greg Benedict (rushed 6 times for 73 yards and a TD, passed 6-9 for 56 yards and 2 TDs) and RB Daulton Tarter (15 carries for 143 yards and had 1 catch for a TD) led the way.  I mention them because they both suffered injuries that caused them to leave the game in the second half.  Backup QB Ryland Tucker did very well afterwards by rushing 7 times for 55 yards and a TD.

For Holy Cross, QB Brian Ferguson relied on his legs tonight by rushing 18 times for 48 yards and 2 TDs.  Many times, Ferguson escaped the pocket to make key first downs throughout the game.  Max Hunt was the primary receiver with 4 catches for 51 yards.  At the end of the half, Gabriel Romito made a 35 yard FG that just cleared the bar.  The play of the game for the Indians occurred in the 3rd quarter just after Bracken County went ahead 18-17 after Benedict's rushing TD.  The ensuring onside kick was picked up by Hunt who rumbled down the sideline for 52 yards for the return TD.  A key Indians coaching decision was to go for two with RB Charles Oglesby taking it in.  That made the score 25-18.  This proved critical later in the 4th quarter after Tucker scored his TD from 36 yards.  Kicker Witten Daughtery's attempt was blocked leaving the game at 25-24.  The Indians had to play good defense near the end of the game by forcing a big turnover on downs to cap the victory.

Next Friday night, Covington Holy Cross (2-0) travels across the river to play Clermont Northeastern while Bracken County (1-1) stays on the road to play Bishop Brossart.

No, if healthy, they are a good solid team with nice players.

Top 10 team in 2A?!!

I’m sure Holy Cross has improved, but a top 10 team in 2A should not have lost this game tonight.

Honestly, I thought it was a great game.  HC didn't have many answers for the BC running game, but the Indians did make some key stops at critical points.  I'll let the BC faithful defend their ranking situation.

It looks like the difference in the game was kicking. Holy Cross made two extra points and a field goal. They made  one two point conversion. Bracken County was unable to convert any extra points.

Been a problem for years.  Do they play soccer anywhere in Bracken County?

Funny but not wrong.  I would guess it is the same for a lot of teams, but HC's kicking game has been decent the last 5-6 years because of soccer players.  When my son was there, they asked the boys if any of them had friends on the soccer team who would kick.  Practice if and when they have time, and then show up on Friday nights.

As posted earlier:

Bracken County had 4 turnovers.  They had 24 points on 4 touchdowns.  They missed two PATs, one was blocked, and a failed 2-point conversion.  QB and Safety Greg Benedict got hurt at the start of the 3rd and didn’t come back in.  Daulton Tarter got hurt in the 3rd as well and didn’t come back in.  Bracken County was up 18-17, but tried an onside kick that was retuned for a TD.

Losing your best players on BOTH sides of the ball is pretty daunting to overcome.

Last week: Benedict threw for 138 yards, had three interceptions, and 10 tackles (1 for a loss). Tarter ran for 148 yards and had 10 tackles (3 for a loss).

They are both pretty solid teams.  But the 4 turnovers and no PATs is very bad.  They should be glad they were still in the game at that point with the previously mentioned.

Polar Bears go into a bye week, will come to Alexandria on Sept. 12th to play Brossart.

Congrats to HC!

Oops, I misstated that in my post.  I didn't look at the date of BC's bye.

Should be a good one.
