Have you guys actually watched games the past 11 years especially with this defense?   The “lack of size” has never mattered because of the scheme they run.  The dline is constantly moving gaps which means the linebackers should have a gazillion tackles.  If those LB’s miss tackles or are making first contact four yards down field both of which happened repeatedly last night you end up giving up 280 on the ground.  On the offensive side CCH went for 190 on the ground.  Size is the least of this teams concerns.  If you can’t get teams out of cover 1 or 0 every single snap with 8 guys in the box that’s a MUCH bigger issue.

Thanks for responding. It didn't matter because these were the middle linebackers for about 7 years:

Kam Butler - 4 year starter at the FBS level - 240lbs

Michael Mayer - NFL player - 240 lbs

Aiden Jones - currently at West Point - 240 lbs

I really like our guys now but they're more of an athlete than super physical and cleaning up between the tackles and beating up on offensive linemen like these three guys. They gave up 290 yards on the ground to Highlands last year and similar last night to Ryle. It's probably going to be the same against the three above listed teams. 

I do agree that lack of a threatening passing game is also a big issue against similarly talented teams.

100%!  Can't be so obviously one-dimensional and beat good / great teams.  Will be interesting to see how the CovCath community feels if Queen has a huge year at Beechwood and he could have been in Park Hills handing it and throwing it to Cash, Dylan, and the rest of those weapons.

Linknky.com  has Verax 2/9 19 yards 1 td and int. He had 65 yards rushing.

That two headed monster (well three with Verax) is a handful.  If Ryle can stay ahead of the sticks and limit turnovers like last night (zero) this is going to be a special year for y’all because they will absolutely take the air of the ball in many 4th quarters this year.

I agree on last night  but there will be a need against X or T.  Probably CAL too but that game is for fun.  So, how much do you practice during the year when you really don't have to?  Ryle could get in another "2024 Situationship" where you are crushing everyone and then finally you come up against a team that is battle-tested/better and then what?

Can we talk about how scared EE has been to pass the ball with Cash at QB? Felt like the whole night was Cash left, Cash right, Gaiser left, Gaiser right, screen pass to Gaiser. Let's talk about the fact that Owen Pitzer (he's the one with D1 offers, Eddie) only had 2 freakin offensive touches. How about our 6-6 wideout Donovan Bradshaw who's taller than every player on Ryle's roster? We passed to him 3 times for 3 catches and 3 first downs but then just reverted for the rest of the game to running Cash and Gaiser and not even thinking about Pitzer. I know I know, last year it went pretty good doing that. But really can we talk about how uninspired EE's offensive plan is?

And can we talk about the fact that we insist on having our starting qb play both ways and how EE forces him to run over to the sideline to personally get the playcall and then run back with it to the huddle every damn play? 35 or 40 plays offensive plays a game, Cash is easily running an extra 1000 or more yards each game just to get the stupid playcall. How about sending your play in with a different wr or rb like basically every other coach does instead of wearing out your qb with completely unnecessary running, Eddie? Instead we were down 2 scores with 9 mins left and EE is running down the play clock having Cash run back and forth from the sideline to get the play. Do we even have a hurry up offense at all? Like seriously do we? I don't think I've ever seen us run a 2 minute offense under EE. We needed scores and last night we were completely incapable of getting any plays off until the back judge had counted down to 5 or less seconds every play.

They got a long way to go. Gotta get the trenches figured out if they want a shot to win 4A. Highlands IMO is a legit contender for 4A after beating Frederick Douglass in OT.

Harney isn’t a great throwing QB. Most of his passing yardage came off of screen plays. Yes, he did complete a few balls down field but also threw 2 picks (almost 3) the first being on the first drive. Any coach would be hesitant to throw the ball after that.

He is a great runner in the open field. I saw a gameplan to dink and dunk w/ screens combined w/ vertical routes that opened the field for him to run. It worked well.

If CCHS had a traditional pocket passer and had Harney in the slot, their offense would certainly be more difficult to defend. I’m sure EE has determined they don’t have that player yet.

Ryle had the better team with better players. I think EE and his staff did a great job getting his team prepared and put them in positions to win that game. If Harney doesn’t throw those INT’s, it may have been a different game, but that wasn’t on the coaches.

Mongrelcat, You think it would have been different if Cov. Cath would have had a pocket passing quarterback when the offensive line wasn’t able to stop the defense ? Harney , last year, had a total of (2) interceptions for the entire year, playing against Ryle 6A and is supposedly ranked second in the state, maybe it should of been a running clock situation Friday night. Ryle is going to beat a lot of their opponents this year, maybe you have the answers you can pass on to their opponents to help them out !
